Beacon Brewery
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Beacon Brewery co. was started by Gerry Watts, formerly of Higsons Brewery in Liverpool, and it began commercial brewing operations in April 1981. It was located off the high street of Oakhill village, Somerset, in part of the old Oakhill Brewery, which was closed in 1938 by Courage.
It brewed two main beers. Fosseway Bitter was the first beer lauched. Fosseway Forty was a stronger beer launched originally for the 1981 winter market but it proved popular enough to maintain permanently. The two beers were later joined by Fosseway Stout, a tribute beer to the original Invalid Stout brewed on the premises by the original Oakhill Brewery. There were plans to launch a lager but the owners death in 1983 led to the closure of the company in March of that year.
However the location and plant were taken over by a new owner, Reg Keevil. He started a new Oakhill Brewery company which began operating in 1984.
