[edit] Welcome

I know that you've been here for a while but I welcome anyway

Welcome!

Hello, Beardo, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!

[edit] Nefertiti

Thank you for your contribution to Nefertiti. Normally, comments like that should go on the TALK page for the article. In any case, I found that sentence in the article not only confusing, but also useless as well so I removed it.

[edit] Donovan

In response to commetary at Dan Donovan I've created two working drafts of new articles here. Please check these against what you know and leave commentary at either Dan Donovan or my talk page. Thanks much! Dan, the CowMan 04:37, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Alright, I've pushed the changes out, relinked the related articles, and made Dan Donovan a disambiguation page.

[edit] Moa, Cuba

Can you add some context to the "culo del mundo" affirmation in the Moa article? (Or remove the comment altogether) As it it now it hardly seems encyclopedic... Qyd (talk)04:14, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

No, never made it past Marti. But I heard talk about Moa. Is it true that Sherritt sold its intrests in Moa to a chinese company? (this rumour circulated last autumn). Other places that would qualify for the description would be the red earth woods in Casillo, or the mosquito infested swamps in Majaguillar... That would be in Cuba, in the wide world, I'm sure there's far worse places. Qyd (talk)16:59, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

About the Sherrit Bussines it's just a rumour here in Cuba, and I think it will be just that, no official talk about that... about the "culo del mundo" thats an offensive expresion here in Cuba and is common to call that way at any small rural town in Cuba, but is only used in an offensive way. [edit] History Of Violence

I've since watched the film again. What strikes me is the contrast between the film's violent scenes and all those outside of it (I'm including the pseudo-rape on the stairway with "violent scenes"). Maybe I'm not used to watching candid small-town folk interact, but the reality of the intensely violent scenes (and even their dialogue) contrasts massively between everything else. You mentioned "mythic" - could you extrapolate on that?

[edit] Sonya vs Sonja

You inserted the following into the The Shadow of the Vulturearticle. In June 2006, the owners of the rights to Red Sonja initiated a court case against the owners of the rights to Red Sonya claiming unfair competition and trademark infringement. I have not yet checked if you also put in in Red Sonja, but anyway, to deserve being in the article, this bit needs a lot more substantiation : who owns Red Sonya (I'm pretty sur Sonja is Marvel property), who launched the suit, under what terms etc, preferably with links to sources. otherwise, it is just pointless cruft. --Svartalf 01:18, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cuban matters

Hi Beardo

  • A Fresa y chocolate page is essential, Beardo. I can't believe it's taken that long to for wikipedia to get round to it! It would also complement a minor tussle I'm having on the Gay rights in Cuba page which I felt wasn't up to date or accurate on first viewing.
  • I think I replied on the Central Bank of Cuba page on that topic, feel free to start a banking in Cuba page.
  • I wouldn't worry about the El Benny article - as long as it's NPOV. But be prepared for a battle with the deletionists. I've had to rescue a few of these from those who believe non-English speaking movies are not important. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Clase Z "Tropical".
  • I understand your points concerning the allegations of tourist apartheid in Cuba. I had to fight to get it to "tourist apartheid", it actually read simply "apartheid in Cuba" at first which was even worse! I think it was set up after a dispute over "Israeli apartheid" - anything that anyone could find that was described as "apartheid" somewhere got a page.--Zleitzen 03:22, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi Z - you were up late if you're in the UK.
Sorry - I'd missed your response on banking. Yes, I am sure that the National Bank deserves a page.
El Benny - maybe I'll start with the director and star. (The star just won an award at Locarno Film Festival - so perhaps he'll be our first article on an actor who is still in Cuba. (Though Jorge Perugorria deserves one, too.)) Of course, short films tend to have a harder time than full-length features.
btw - a number of geographical pages have links to a Spanish language site www.guije.com. This seems to be referring to a pre-1976 (possibly pre-1959) status. I wonder how best to dscribe that.
-- Beardo 05:08, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for changing those damn film director categories that I messed up, I'm an idiot with practical matters as you may have noticed. As for staying up late - put it down to an erratic sleep pattern, a very demanding 6 month old bairn (and the other 3 monsters), and a welcome extended break from this place [1] with no work commitments other than to check emails! Editing this thing is a welcome diversion and keeps the brain ticking over. --Zleitzen 04:29, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Allegations of tourist apartheid

I don't know who rattled the anon's cage on that talk page! But there is an element of practicality about the comments in the sense of this: Having added the POV template, which is perfectly acceptable, you really would need to offer suggestions on how to make the page NPOV. I understand entirely why you believe the page to be POV, but how do you propose to change this?--Zleitzen 09:05, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Madagascar and Other Cuban Films - Reply

Hi Beardo. Thanks for the welcome. I replied to you on my talk page before I could figure out how to navigate to yours. In response to your question, I think I will try to edit a couple of more pages on the particular Cuban films that I think have not received sufficient critical/public attention. I did a whole bunch of writing and research and interviews on this stuff as an undergraduate and am happy to find a place to publicize some of it. In particular, I'm planning to refine some of the Madagascar entry (add some links and stuff), add some stuff on Enrique Colina, and generally look through the piles of essays i've got sitting around in my hard-drive to see what else might be useful/interesting.

oh, and you're right. i certainly did not mean to flag that as a minor edit...newbie screw up. Aaronshaw 22:30, 9 September 2006 (UTC) [[2]]

[edit] Question about the whole original research thing

So, I cited the two relevant sources for the vast majority of the stuff I put up on the Madagascar page. There are still a couple of details that I learned from a personal interview with the director, though. I could cut them, but am not really distressed to have them in the public domain...I'm sure they showed up in an interview in a Cuban newspaper at some point in the early 90's. However, I also don't want to evade the GFDL or Wikipedia's requirements in any way...

what would you recommend?Aaronshaw 04:38, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Iron Maiden doom band

If I remember right, it was mentioned in the original Iron Maiden article, and I removed it to set up a new page. Either that or it was a red link on the disambig page. But the reference to the other Iron Maiden being a doom band was created by someone else... I think.. it was a while ago :D --PopUpPirate 21:06, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cuban actors

Hi Beardo, when writing up a new piece on a Cuban actor - could you add the name to the List of Cubans page under the appropriate headings, that page needs beefing up. Thanks.--Zleitzen 16:09, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Re:List of Cubans. I had a go at moving obvious Cuban-Americans to the List of Cuban-Americans - these were people that were either born in the US, or had relocated so long ago at such a young age that they had made no impact on Cuban life, their careers were synonomous with the US. I maybe wrong. Beyond that I don't know and I don't feel like I'm a good enough judge to make the call, especially with the baseball players as I know nothing about that sporting culture. The occupations sections do need further sorting out. But it's a tedious task.--Zleitzen 22:26, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Harry Potter 7, mystery title change

Hello Nice to see that some new faces have recently become interested in commenting on the article. However, I am interested to know how you became involved with the page? It would seem that someone came along and changed the title without any discussion. Then someone started a debate about a different title. A number of people I have never seen comment on a Harry Potter page then opposed the proposed further move. This is quite extraordinary attention for a HP page.

No one has yet explained the grounds for changing the page from its original title. Can you explain why this was done? It was also done by someone who had never edited the page before and was pretty inexperienced. A justification was given, but not explained. Then an anon deleted the debate. Also very strange. Why would anyone do this? Sounded like someone wanted to avoid discussion. While I do not think it likely that people would have opposed the page title change if it is satifactorily explained, this has still not been done. I do not see how any change of title can be discussed or considered unless someone explains why it needed to be moved in the first place. Sandpiper 07:54, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Was just browsing through and looked this over.

Yes, this is true, as I have myself been relayed this information from family sources however, I think it would be rather difficult to provide citations as, Mirta's family is very hush-hush on this subject. She returned recently to be with Fidelito. I found it VERY interesting. Would never have guessed.

Hey thanks for the heads up regarding this article on my talkpage, however I'm inclined to agree with your consensus in keeping this article. I did some research on the articles creator Igbogirl (talk contribs) only to discover her only created article contributions are the one at hand, and another article King Igwegbe Odum, the Omenuko of History an article regarding her nn great-grandfather. [edit] Re; Bravedog (talk contribs) and The Apprentice

It's not immediately apparent whether WP:RM is policy, guideline, or something else, but it's definitely bad form to unilaterally move a page like The Apprentice without discussion. The wording of my warning to him was not my own but that of {{MP3}}, a standard warning template for just such an occaision. Perhaps it is a bit too harsh in tone, but it does appear that he was attempting to promote "his" article over the original by redirecting the page to The Apprentice (UK). -Anþony 10:40, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Good work Beardo. Whenever I've tried to ask for protection, its been like pulling teeth. I have no idea why the Cuba page was semi-protected for so long before - nearly 6 months. Regardless of how noble some users believe the policy of allowing unregistered users to edit articles is, it successfully reduced stress levels to near zero, and allowed the page to improve gradually and organically for the better. For the above and other long term improvements to the Cuba articles - I award you with this brand new barn star created by my more computer literate daughter for such a purpose!

I understand 'EJ' is knowledgeable and a source of information. However that dosen't give him permission to blog the 'talk' pages. I've nothing personal against EJ, but if everyone (registered & unregistered) blogged article 'talk pages', there'd be little room left for what they're actually for. [edit] Holy independence, Beardo

Did I dream it, or did I read somewhere that you wrote that Cesar Romero was descended from Jose Marti?--Zleitzen 04:20, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Indeed yes - see http://www.historyofcuba.com/history/funfacts/CesarRom.htm . It is mentioned in both the Cesar Romero and José Martí articles. As part of the 150th (?) anniversary celebrations, two ladies came to Cuba to visit, who were described as descendants of Marti through his daughter, without questioning - though it seems there is no confirmation that she was his. Oddly http://www.cubanow.net/global/loader.php?secc=5&cont=stories/num11/01.htm describes them as Romero's daughters - but our article indicates that he was a confirmed bachelor. Perhaps they were his nieces ? -- Beardo 04:34, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Beardo:

There is an article (circa 1950s) in Bohemia on Cesar Romero in which this was accepted. What one would like to see is a DNA analysis of Marti's genome. From memory there seems to be an inference that Marti's family was from Majorca and the last name is included among the "San Benito" (e.g. of Jewish descent). One wonders if he had Cohenim sequences El Jigue 1-2-07

[edit] Founder vs co-founder

Doesn't founder seem to imply sole founder? I suppose it is more middle ground to say founder than co-founder, but it still has its own implications. I guess there's also "a founder", but I don't know if that's any better since it makes the implication he might not be the only one. Owen 11:51, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Can you prove what you're saying? If so, your observations are quite valuable. We're told that night-club bouncers in Cuba systematically block entrance to Cuban nationals - but do they ask for passports? If they're simply going by their own predujices, then the real state of affairs is "wealth apartheid", the same thing we live under. PalestineRemembered 12:12, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Four ashkenazic Jews were in the small group that founded the first Communist Party of Cuba in 1925: Grimberg, Vasserman, Simjovich aka Grobart, and Gurbich. They opposed the religious and community life of the other Jews.”

Evidence has been presented to link Grobart to the Leon Trotsky assassination, and less strong evidence to the Julio Antonio Mella assassination.

Although the party Grobart helped found was not the first Cuban communist party, it is considered as such by the present Cuban government.

His son(?) Fabio Grobart Sunshine has a number of publications and is highly placed among the Cuban Nomenclatura.

I am preparing a major footnote in my book on Grobart and I am will to share some (but not all (:>) citations) to this major figure in Cuban history. Could somebody be so kind as too open such an article El Jigue 1-12-07 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 208.65.188.149 (talk) 19:55, 12 January 2007 (UTC).

Beardo did quite and bit more then took a rest from Fabio Grobart you may want to take another look at it. Thank you. El Jigue 1-14-06

[edit] Minor edits

Apologies for that, if that's indeed the case. I'm afraid I can't check the guidelines though as the link you left doesn't seem to work? Cheers. Angmering 22:34, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Maureen Starkey and Barbara Bach

Thank you for removing the boxes from those articles - as you can see in the history I've been trying to remove them for a while now but kept getting reverted and eventually blocked for it.--90.240.140.197 00:24, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] About Moa

Beardo, I think you must delete that reference to Moa as "el culo del mundo" it means in English "the arse of the world" and it's pretty offensive if any wikipedian user from Moa see that article maybe will get very angry, because you are ofending them telling their town is called the arse of the world, and that's not true, as I know. [edit] Holguin tree & ataxia

Hi, thanks for your talk, go and check 4 my answers, first I think that the Holguin tree section in Holguín article must not be there, it have nothing to do with that Cuban city or province and it is not consistent... and second I'll try to contribute with some scientific information about the Ataxia in Holguín... I'll try to help w/ a good article ... another thing: I can see you're interested in Cuban Cinema, I know someone who could help you w/ some good info, she is a kind of Cuban cinema specialist but can only talk in Spanish and basic English: Here is her link, she is completly new in Wiki... but knows a lot about Cuban cinema....well... hope you'll be in touch...KatKiller 07:07, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Something for your mantlepiece

Here's something for your mantlepiece, Beardo. Add to it if you can!

I have a challenge for you also, Beardo. To find as many interesting facts around the Cuban articles as possible to add to the rotating content section of this page Portal:Cuba/DYK. If we get enough we could have 5 for each day of the month on automatic rotation. Are you able to rise to such a challenge?-- Zleitzen(talk) 04:10, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Hola!
