Bujanovac (Serbian Cyrillic: Бујановац, Albanian: Bujanoci) is a town and municipality in Pčinja District of Serbia, situated in the Preševo Valley and close to the eastern extreme of Kosovo.

According to 2002 census, the municipality of Bujanovac had a population of 43,302 people. The Bujanovac municipality has 461 square kilometers and 59 inhabited places.

In 1991, the population of the Bujanovac municipality was composed of: [1]

• Albanians = 29,588 (60.09%)
• Serbs = 14,660 (29.77%)
• Roma = 4,408 (8.95%)

In 2002, the population of the Bujanovac municipality was composed of:

• Albanians = 23,681 (54.69%)
• Serbs = 14,782 (34.14%)
• Roma = 3,867 (8.93%)

Between 1999 and 2001, an ethnic Albanian guerilla organization similar to the KLA, known as the "Liberation Army of Preševo, Medveđa and Bujanovac", operated in this region with a goal to gain rights of ethnic Albanian population taken by Milošević government and not returned even though at that time democratic parties were in the power. Though there were casualties and injuries on both sides, the events did not quite attract the same international media attention as what had been happening in Kosovo until 1999, and what was also happening south of the border in Macedonia during 2001. The situation approaching 2006 is peaceful, but not entirely stable.
