[edit] Name
In Serbian, the town is known as Зајечар or Zaječar, and in Vlach/Romanian as Zăii-cer (archaic name) / Zăiceri / Zăicear.
The origin of the name is probably Turkish. "Zāii cer" in Vlach, a language of the local minority nation, means the "Gods are asking (for sacrifice)".
[edit] History
Zaječar was first mentioned in Turkish defter in 1466. Near the town can be found the ruins of Roman imperial palace Felix Romuliana.
