[edit] History
Cheadle Town started life in 1961 as Grasmere Rovers and were playing in the local Manchester Junior football league on Sunday afternoons; joining the Manchester League in 1972 allowed them to play their football on the more regular Saturday afternoon. Grasmere Rovers moved to Park Road in 1982 and then changed their name to Cheadle Town in 1983, at the same time joining the North West Counties Football League. Cheadle Town have spent most of their NWCFL life in Division Two; 1998 saw the start of a three-year escape from Division Two as the club were promoted to Division One. Cheadle Town were relegated back to Division Two in 2001 and have stayed there ever since.
They kicked off their 2006-2007 league campaign on Saturday 12th August 2006 with a 2-1 victory at home to Castleton Gabriels and then won their next three matches. They were then eliminated from the FA Cup at the Preliminary Round stage after suffering a 0-6 defeat away to Alsager Town at the beginning of September, sparking a run of almost three months without a win and elimination from three other cup competitions. This hoodoo was broken on Wednesday 22nd November 2006 with a 1-0 home win against Chadderton.
Cheadle Town's traditional colours are white and black, worn in the combination of white shirts, black shorts and white stockings. However, over recent seasons they have appeared in yellow shirts, blue shorts and yellow stockings (which is now used as the away strip) and now this season's strip of sky blue and white striped shirts, navy blue shorts and stockings.
[edit] Foreign Tours
Despite being at the bottom of the football pyramid, Cheadle Town are famous throughout non-league football for their foreign tours and has a record of playing 96 games in 30 different countries in front of 312,000 people, scoring 111 goals in the process. They have even graced the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, playing to a crowd of 65,000. The foreign tours have seen Cheadle Town FC travel just over 200,000 miles around the world.
