Dr. Christian Troy is a fictional character played by Julian McMahon on FX Networks' Nip/Tuck. The show revolves around McNamara/Troy, the plastic surgery practice he runs with his business partner and best friend, Sean McNamara.

Christian was initially characterized as a self-absorbed womanizer with no qualms about using people to get what he wanted. He drives flashy cars, wears Gucci-brand clothes, and frequents Miami's best nightclubs.

The character was eventually revealed to have a vulnerable side beneath his callous exterior, however. In one episode, he confessed that he was molested as a child by his foster father. (This early trauma) destroyed his faith in a just God, and he thereafter became an atheist.) In another story arc, he met his biological mother, who told him that he was the product of rape; she then cut off any contact with him because he was the spitting image of his father, her rapist.

In the third season, Christian himself was raped by The Carver, a masked serial killer preying on McNamara/Troy's patients. Adding insult to injury, he was briefly suspected of, and arrested once for, the Carver's crimes. A distraught Christian temporarily withdrew from work, prompting Sean to bring in another surgeon, Quentin Costa. Costa inserted himself in Christian's relationship with Kimber, and the two became bitter rivals. Costa eventually revealed himself as none other than the Carver, and kidnapped both Sean and Christian. After Costa cut off Sean's finger, Christian tried to spare his friend by offering up his own left hand. Before Costa could mutilate either of them further, however, he was shot from behind by Kit McGraw, the detective on the case (and, secretly, his sister and accomplice).

He has had affairs with most of the series' female characters, including Sean's wife, Julia; unbeknown to Sean, his son Matt, is in fact Christian's biological child. The show's first two seasons included many episodes centered around Christian's dysfunctional relationship with Kimber, a former patient whom he often manipulated and cheated on. They almost married in season three, but Kimber was kidnapped by the Carver; after she was rescued, she wouldn't let Christian see what the Carver did to her appearance. She broke off their relationship so she could do some soul-searching. Eventually, Kimber comes back as a Scientologist, recruits his son Matt to the church, and marries him even though she's still in love with Christian. When Kimber became pregnant, Christian tried to steal DNA for a paternity test, convinced he was the real father.

In the first season, he had a one-night stand with Gina Russo, a recovering sex addict. Gina, angered to have broken her vow of celibacy, resolved to make Christian's life miserable, and the two initiate a bitter, love/hate relationship that is not resolved until the fourth season. Christian adopts her son, Wilbur.

In season three, Christian had a brief three-way relationship with Kimber and Kit.

In season four, Christian began dreaming about having sex with Sean. Distressed, he entered therapy with Dr. Faith Wolper — and eventually had sex with her. She later told him that she was a recovering sex addict, and had realized after their tryst that she still had a problem. She then asked him to remove a tattoo an ex-lover had forced her to get as a means of degrading her. Christian eventually realized the dreams were the result of his own personal identity crisis, and resolved his problems with Sean.

In the same season, he began an affair with Michelle Landau, the wife of McNamara/Troy's owner. Soon after they met, Christian suspected her of having a relationship with a woman named James who was smuggling organs out of the clinic. Christian found out that James was Michelle's former pimp, and blackmailed her into having sex with him. He eventually began to care about her, however, and paid James off to leave her and McNamara/Troy alone. James did not keep her end of the bargain, however; she used McNamara/Troy as a base of operations. Christian then found out that James worked for drug lord Escobar Gallardo (one of the series' primary villains). James eventually committed suicide.

Michelle's husband, Burt, found out about the affair from Wolper, and tried to force the two to have sex in front of him. When Burt tried to have sex with her, he had a stroke and died after Michelle refused him medicine. After Burt's death, Christian and Michelle married, and Michelle agreed to be Wilbur's adoptive mother. The two bought Sean's stake in McNamara/Troy after Sean moved to California. Just as it seemed they would live happily ever after, however, Christian found out that she had been James' accomplice in the organ smuggling ring. Disgusted, he left her and followed Sean to California.

In the flashforward episode "Conor McNamara 2026" Christian is aged and eating too much (leading Annie to comment that he will be the first to die) and in a relationship with two non-english-speaking women. He states he won't marry them as he has tried polygamy before and they only love him for his money.
