[edit] History
The club can trace its origins back to four famous amateur clubs: Ilford (formed in 1881), Leytonstone (1886), Walthamstow Avenue (1900) and Dagenham (1949). All had some success, particularly Leytonstone, who won the FA Amateur Cup three times and the Isthmian League title nine times.
In 1979, Ilford and Leytonstone merged to become Leytonstone/Ilford, and in 1988 they absorbed the struggling Walthamstow Avenue to become Redbridge Forest. Redbridge soon moved in at Dagenham's Victoria Road ground, and achieved promotion to the Football Conference in 1991. Finally, Redbridge Forest merged with Dagenham in 1992 to form Dagenham & Redbridge.
[edit] Recent seasons
The club was relegated to the Isthmian League in 1996, but won promotion in 2000, and established themselves as one of the strongest clubs in the division, finishing 3rd, 2nd and 5th in their first three seasons following promotion. They were only narrowly beaten to the title by Boston United in 2002. Boston were subsequently found guilty of making improper payments to players in their title-winning season, and Dagenham & Redbridge unsuccessfully attempted to have themselves declared Conference champions, and hence take Boston's spot in the Football League.
The following season (2002/2003) saw Dagenham finish 5th, which was good enough to qualify for the first ever Conference playoffs. After beating Morecambe in the semi-final on penalties, they faced Doncaster Rovers in the final. Despite coming back from 2-0 down to 2-2, Dagenham lost to a golden goal in extra time.
The Daggers have struggled since, and in the 2003/2004, 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 seasons finished mid-table. On February 27, 2004 they were beaten 9-0 by Hereford United, equalling the record highest scoreline in the Conference.
The 2006/2007 season has so far seen Dagenham have a successful spell in the Conference. On December 30, a 1-0 win over Halifax Town saw Daggers go top of the Conference on goal difference. They are now thirteen points ahead of Oxford United, with seven matches remaining in the season.
On 22 March 2007, Daggers signed Mark Arber from Peterborough United on loan for the remainder of the season. His debut will be against second placed Oxford, a game in which, if they win, will leave Daggers needing 5 points from their final 7 games.
During the 2006/2007 season the Daggers sold Craig Mackail-Smith and Shane Blackett to Peterborough United for a club record fee of £250,000 (£125,000 each)
