DPS MR Building
DPS MR Building

The first Delhi Public School (DPS) was established in the year 1949 at Mathura Road from where it continues to operate. It started out without a building in tents where classes were held. Nevertheless, it quickly established itself in the 1950s as a leading public school in New Delhi, both academically and in sports, with the student body drawn from the quickly growing populations of Government officials' children and children of the then newly rising Punjabi refugee business community establishing itself in South Delhi. By 1962 the school had moved into a three-story building and by 1970 had a student body of almost 3,000 students enrolled at Mathura Road.

The Rev. (Dr.) J.D. Tytler was the first principal of the School. He was followed by Dr. K.C. Khanna, and then in 1962 by Mr. Din Dayal. Principal Din Dayal led the school into the ranks of the very best schools in the country in the 1960s and 1970s, and it was his vision, formed during his earlier years as a boarding school teacher at Mayo College in Ajmer, and on exchange trips to the United States, that led to the transformation of Delhi Public School into a multi-branch school system uniformly providing the highest quality primary and secondary school education. Under his leadership, finances and governance were greatly strengthened, and the road map drawn to the creation of the many Delhi Public Schools in cities across India and the rest of the World.

Delhi Public School Mathura Road is now spread over fifteen acres of lush green lawns, surrounded by ancient Islamic style tombs, and is situated in the heart of the capital, near the Purana Quila and the Zoological Gardens. It has witnessed the growth of the metropolis over the years. Its contribution in promoting quality education and enrichment of the socio-cultural life of New Delhi has been unparalleled.THE current principal is Mr. M.I. Hussain. The school follows the CBSE system and has continuous tests and assignments to keep the students on their toes .

Delhi Public School Mathura Road is a co-educational day cum boarding school and a member of the Indian Public Schools Conference. The foundation stone of the school building was laid in 1956 by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then Vice-President of India and the buildings were substantially complete by 1965 three years after Principal Din Dayal took over. The impressive school building today comprises four computer centers, a work experience block, laboratories, libraries, swimming pools, squash courts, hostel facility for both boys and girls and the recently introduced public address system.

[edit] DPS, R. K. Puram

DPS RKP Building
DPS RKP Building

DPS Mathura Road was the only DPS till 1972 when a second school was established in R. K. Puram by R. S. Lugani, then vice-principal of DPS Mathura Road under Principal Din Dayal. Mr. Lugani also became the R.K. Puram branch's first principal. While remaining part of the DPS Society, the school at R.K. Puram soon became independent of its parent. It established a separate primary branch at East of Kailash in 1975 and a second primary branch in Vasant Vihar in 1986. This branch has become the preeminent offspring of the DPS Society, having acquired an outstanding track record in the academic achievements of its student body, and in admissions to elite Indian and foreign educational institutions. The second and current principal of DPS R. K. Puram is Dr. Shyama Chona who took over the position in 1991.

On the 29th August, 2002 during the "1st Computer Literacy Excellence Awards for Schools", President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, presented an award to Dr. (Mrs.) Shyama Chona, Principal, Delhi Public School (R.K. Puram). The award was for the Best School at the State (Delhi) Level and the 2nd Runner up in the nation. [1]

Academic excellence is at the forefront of the school, with its record-setting results earning both national and international acclaim. DPS sends at least 150 students to undergraduate institutions in the US every year, with many more attending universities in Great Britain, Australia, Germany and Singapore. Former headboys have attended Stanford, Yale and Harvard. Students of DPS R.K. Puram also excel in national (Indian) entrance examinations to various professional institutes. A large number of students go on to attend medical colleges such as JIPMER, Aligarh Medical College, Bhartiya Vidya Peeth and Manipal and engineering colleges such as IITs, BITS Pilani, NSIT, and Delhi College of Engineering. Graduating students also win places at other noteworthy national colleges such as Lady Shri Ram College, St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi, the National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad, National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, College of Architecture at Chandigarh and New Delhi, and the Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi.

The high standards at DPS R.K. Puram are maintained by the use of innovative teaching methods; and a result oriented curriculum and evaluation system. The student body comprises both day scholars and boarding students. Accommodation is provided to more than 1000 boarding students within the onsite girls' hostel and the boys' millennium hostel - located across the road on the school's sprawling sports campus. The boys' millennium hostel was opened in the year 2000 expanding the boarding school facilities and allowing for a dedicated girls hostel. Competition for a place in one of the hostels is intense and is awarded on a merit only basis.

The schools academic support services include two libraries that house approximately 100,000 books in the senior library, and 10,000 books in the junior library; 5 reading rooms; An audio visual hall with a seating capacity of 400; an air-conditioned Seminar Hall with a seating capacity of 40 and a bookshop catering to all student text and stationery requirements. Assignments and self study materials are regularly distributed in all subjects. The Career Services Center provides counseling and guidance to students and also monitors their progress. The Counseling Center helps students with any personal problems and promotes emotional well being.

DPS R.K.Puram has 2 junior schools - DPS Vasant Vihar and DPS East of Kailash - each having schooling from Lower Kindergarden to Grade V.
