[edit] 2006 Season

I noticed that the 2006 Season is a really really long section of the article...Would it be a better idea to have a small paragraph or two summary or selection of that article on this page and make the 2006 Detroit Tigers its own page? [Reference what the 2006 Minnesota Twins is like]

Agreed.

Changed Game 4 info...Don Larsen pitched a perfect game in the World Series.

  • Not sure if that's the answer or not, but what I do know is that the section on the 2006 season is waaaaaaaaay too long. It's been a fantastic season for Detroit, but they do have over a century of baseball to be addressed in this article, and 2006 is only one year. Vidor 00:06, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
There are also some raging POV and even OR issues in that section. Lot of rah-rah talk, as well as some evaluation-type statements on players. Now that their season is nearly over, it's a good time to condense it. | Mr. Darcy talk 02:16, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mention of article in Detroit Free Press

haha, I thought it was pretty funny that this article got mentioned in the Freep this morning: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2006608020435 I read through this article every day (or so) and it was quite humorous for me to see it in a real publication --X96lee15 16:52, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Current roster

I propose that we delete the current Detroit Tigers roster from this page. The timeliness of the information makes it more suited to wikinews. It would be more succinct to add a link to Tigers page on ESPN.com or Yahoo! Sports. What say you? --djrobgordon 17:38, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Given that all pages on major league baseball teams feature that information, this really isn't the place to raise the issue. I'm not if there's a page somewhere to discuss issues relating to all articles on major league teams. Mackensen (talk) 18:05, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The Tigers have signed this years first round pick, Andrew Miller. He has been sent to Lakeland and is on the 40 man roster. He gets a 4 year deal.--Tigersfan1992 22:54, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ernie Harwell

Should he be added to the Hall of Famers list?

Not only that, but can we please at least MENTION Ernie Harwell in this article? Not many other figures in American sports have been so associated with one team, despite having never played for, coached, or owned said team.

On a related note, to whomever redid the retired numbers section, NICE touch. I think it's a great way to not only honor the tigers greats, but to explain the names in commerica park to all who wiki this. Top job! BT14 16:09, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tigers player pages

Whoever did some of the Tigers player pages like the Franklyn German page needs to do a little better job at it. This below is a whole article:

Franklyn German is a relief pitcher currently playing with the Detroit Tigers, and has a career ERA of 5.73.

C'mon, people can do a little better than that!

[edit] Main Rivals

Are the Yankees really are a "main rival" of the Tigers? I don't think so. Win777 21:43, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

Given the way the Tigers have played in recent years, I really don't think you could label them as part of any rivalry. Maybe the 1962 Mets, but that would be about it. Wahkeenah 23:45, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

I think you could call the Indians and White Sox rivals, couldn't you? User:68.255.76.217 05:03, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

  • You could, but only because they're in the same division, so it doesn't add anything to the article. Every intra-division matchup constitutes a "rivalry". Wahkeenah 06:36, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Cleveland is not a rival; what a joke. I've gone to well over 100 games, lived in Detroit for over 30 years, and never heard anyone mention Cleveland as a rival, until I read it here. I don't think the Tigers have any rivalries. Maybe the Blue Jays, when we were in the same division, but that's history. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.220.177.1 (talk • contribs) .

[edit] Player National Flags

What is the protocol on this? Carlos Pena was born in the Dominican Republic, but as far as I know, he's an American citizen and has been for a while. Does the flag always represent nation of birth? --Elliskev 20:57, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

Yes, flags should refer to country of birth. Citizenship generally isn't public information, so it would be hard to keep rosters accurate if that was used. - Pal 21:58, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
Makes sense. Thanks! --Elliskev 12:54, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] History-2003 season

Shouldn't someone at least mention the horrible 2003 season? For some reason we skip right from 200 to 2004, and that seems sort of like a key season. User:68.255.76.217 05:04, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

  • It is mentioned, under the "Tigers Declawed" section. Wahkeenah 06:38, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 2006 Record

Should the team's current record really be in this article? Seems to me that's an ever-changing number. Currently it's being updated regularly, but what if the updater goes on vacation?

I think it should be removed.--X96lee15 22:46, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Don't keep it. Except for the occasional off day, it requires daily updating, and it is extremely subject to being outdated often. Many services already cover current baseball records. Wikipedia is not a news service. -- Win777 03:59, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Current Logo

Can someone add the current logo? I don't know how to upload them. Bornagain4 12:58, 27 June 2006 (EST)

  • I think the logo is the current one. It's the logo on http://www.detroittigers.com Are you referring to the D with the Tiger crawling through it? --X96lee15 17:30, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

I must have made a mistake, if it is the logo on the website, well, we can't argue with that. Bornagain4 17:58, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] team numbers

What is Lloyd McClendon's number if 21 was given to Sean Casey? Does anyone know? --Tigersfan1992 20:28, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 2006 "Highlights"

I think we should keep them. After this season, I think they can be summarized into a single paragraph or two once we see how the season ends and can then determine what the actual "highlights" are. Until then, I think we should put them back in. I do agree thought that they should be removed once we can put the entire season in perspective. X96lee15 17:22, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

You can tuck them away on a user subpage and insert them later when the season is over as part of the overall team history. Notes on Shelton's pace to 8 home runs and on Guillen's cycle are appropriate because they are notable for history, record setting, and rare. Right now, Wikipedia does not need updates for every game in which the Tigers overcome a deficit for a win or for one grand slam. News articles and blogs cover games and current events well enough. Wikipedia is not a newspaper or a blog. -- Win777 17:27, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I suppose you are right. I do think that those moments are important to the 2006 season though. What if a "2006 Detroit Tigers" was created? I'm not sure of the precedent, but I seem to recall seeing individual season pages for sports teams while I've been poking around here. X96lee15 18:20, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

That about a third of the article text is listing highlights of a single season for a team with a 100-year history is really not really very encylodpedic! And makes for extremely dull reading. Nfitz 16:32, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Succession boxes

Yikes! Too many, IMO. I'm not sure what the precedent from other pages are, but the ones on this page clutter things up. I can only imagine what the Yankees page looks like. All that info can be found in the main info box at the top of the page (number of WS champs, pennants, ALCSs, etc.). X96lee15 21:37, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jon Merryman

Jon Merryman is the greatest baseball player to ever play the game because he has every single World Series Title and ring. By the way he can also throw a three-ten curveball. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 165.139.139.129 (talk) 13:36, 13 March 2007 (UTC).

[edit] 2007

"signed third baseman Brandon Inge and starting pitcher Jeremy Bonderman to four-year contracts." this should be resigned.

[edit] Quick Facts

   Team Motto(s):
       * "Who's Your Tiger?"
       * "Home Again" (in reference to the team's move to Comerica Park)
   Theme Song(s):
       * "Tiger Rag"
       * "Go Get 'Em Tigers"- Written and recorded during the '60's.
       * "Lifelong Tiger Fan Blues"- A song written by Jeff Daniels in 1993, with numerous versions recorded since, including an updated version in 2006 after the Tigers' ALDS win.
       * "Bless You Boys"- Theme song for the 1984 season.

Who's your Tiger is not a motto, it's an ad slogan. I've never even heard the Home Again phrase. Also to be a Theme Song I think the song should be played at least once a game, if the Tigers are not in the playoffs these songs are not even heard. It would be better to list these as Previous Rally Songs or even Songs Inspired by the Tigers. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by RichGreene (talkcontribs) 00:27, 27 March 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Franchise History

"The club is a charter member of the American League, one of four clubs (with the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and Cleveland Indians) still located in its city of founding."

The syntax of this sentence makes the fact wrong. Tampa Bay, Toronto and others are still in the original city of founding. It should read something like: The club is one of four charter members of the American League to still be located in its city of founding. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by RichGreene (talkcontribs) 00:30, 27 March 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Logo Box

It really should say Home Cap Insignia, since the Road cap is different. The Tigers use different D's everywhere, including their home jersey, and on the field and signs at Comerica Park. Maybe there should be a short note of this in the main article. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by RichGreene (talkcontribs) 00:37, 27 March 2007 (UTC).
