Donald Oliver Hutchison (born 9 May 1971 in Gateshead, UK) is a football player. He currently plays for Coventry City of the English Football League Championship. He plays in either midfield or attacking positions. He has earned 26 caps for the Scottish national team.
He started his career at Hartlepool United F.C. as a trainee, but was quickly spotted by the big guns and moved to Liverpool in 1990.
He joined Millwall in August 2005 after being released at the start of the 2005-06 season by rival club West Ham United. Although many would see this as a fall from grace for a player that cost a then club record transfer fee of £5 million, he was undoubtedly unlucky, sustaining a cruciate ligament injury in February 2002. When he finally regained full fitness, he found himself out of favour with the clubs new manager Alan Pardew. He had two spells at West Ham, breaking the club transfer record both times (£1.5 million in August 1994, and £5 million in August 2001). He spent barely three months at Millwall, during which time he struggled to hold down a regular place in the starting XI. On November 24, 2005 he left Millwall by mutual consent and signed for Coventry City later the same day, where he is now at the heart of the club's midfield and is well-respected by Sky Blues fans. This is mainly because his thoughtful, innovative and resilient style of play and general attitude is reminiscent of that of ex-Coventry player Gary McAllister.
[edit] The Don
Hutchison played an immense role in trying to get Scotland into Euro 2000. He scored at Wembley in the 1-0 playoff win over England only to go out 2-1 on aggregate. He was named the Don after Don King, due to his boxing skills and successful promotion and coaching of his nephew Rick "Rocky" Hutchison, who claimed the U20's Scotland Boxing Championship in 2005.
He is one of a small group of players that have played for both Liverpool and Everton. He has also played for Sheffield United and Sunderland.
