Okay, I obviously must have different sources. I thought that Earth was symbolized by dark green, was attributed to Spring, and the direction south, while fire is north, water west, and wind east. AncientNova 03:28, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
- These directions are commonly used in the southern hemisphere (north and south are inverted from the common northern hemisphere attributions), however I can't see how spring would fit in the south. East, where the sun rises, is associated with spring and newness, and also air. There's fairly widespread agreement on this in the western mystery traditions. In the northern hemisphere the sun reaches its highest and hottest in the southern part of the sky, and in the southern hemisphere it reaches its hottest in the northern part, so these quarters respectively are generally associated with fire. There is some disagreement over whether water or earth go in the west, and most often it's water, so that air and water are opposite, and fire and earth are opposite. This was the Golden Dawn working, partly based on certain Qabalistic concerns, and trying to match certain antiquated texts, and it seems to have stuck. This works to some extent, but I prefer having air and earth opposite, and fire and water opposite, which more closely follows the classical conception of the elements. By the Golden Dawn attributions, you have air for spring, fire for summer, water for autumn and earth for winter (directions as you described if you're in the southern hemisphere). By what I believe is the more correct system you have earth for autumn and water for winter. The colours commonly used in ceremonial magic and much neopaganism are the Golden Dawn colours: air:yellow, fire:red, earth:green, water:blue.
