Mad scientists are stock characters of popular fiction, either villainous, or benignly unconscious and scatter-brained. Some scientists are evil but not mad. Some fictional scientists are perfectly ordinary. Others are super-scientists working on stuff far beyond the typical science of their era, though neither mad nor evil. Some are neither mad, evil, nor "super", instead working on science typical of their era.
Many fictional scientists are also engineers.
