Sandy Cheeks is a fictional animated character in the Nickelodeon animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants. Sandy is voiced by Carolyn Lawrence. Unlike most of the other characters in the series, Sandy is not a sea creature.

Sandy is a very talented and athletic squirrel born in the state of Texas, who moved to Bikini Bottom in the South Pacific Ocean underneath Bikini Atoll in about 1998, because her job is experimenting underwater. She lives in an air-filled habitat structure called the Treedome (a polyurethane dome containing a tree, living quarters and various other land plants). When outside of the Treedome, Sandy wears an air-filled suit that looks much like an astronaut's space suit; while in her Treedome, she wears a purple bikini with a purple skirt-like ring around her middle and with green underneath. Physically, Sandy is one of the strongest creatures (along with Larry Lobster) in Bikini Bottom. She even claims to be stronger than Larry, and the strongest in Bikini Bottom and can even pull down gigantic ships and boats from the surface of the ocean as seen in "Sandy, SpongeBob, and the Worm".

Sandy wears a white and gray air-filled suit that looks much like an astronaut's space suit. In season one, it has a yellow badge with three black dots. Later seasons, however, show her wearing an badge with an acorn instead(also in season one, her tail did not stick out of her suit, but became visible in later episodes). Her helmet has a pink flower on it. When in her Treedome she wears a purple bikini with a purple skirt-like ring around her middle and with green underneath.

Sandy's arms appear less muscular than SpongeBob's arms most of the time (although they actually are much stronger), and sometimes she is shown with very muscular arms as seen in episodes such as Karate Island and MuscleBob BuffPants.

Sandy is one of the shortest characters on the show - SpongeBob being the only main character of a lesser stature than her.

While hibernating, she becomes an large bear-like creature due to consuming large amounts of food, as opposed to her usual sweet squirrel appearance. She has the tendency to talk about old west outlaws in her sleep — and she is vicious when she sleepwalks.

Sandy's interests include karate, meditation, surfing, knitting, arts and crafts, shoplifting, various forms of extreme activities, and science. Related to the latter - specifically astronomy - Sandy is an esteemed scientist and inventor, and has built her own rocket in "Sandy's Rocket." She's even gone to the moon; but, unlike SpongeBob, she does not believe in aliens. In the Episode "Wishing You Well", Sandy wished for an telescope that worked underwater, proving her love for astronomy. Recently, Sandy also has taken (and got carried away with) explosive special effects in filmmaking. She also knows how to play the guitar, as revealed in "Texas" and "Chimps Ahoy."

Sandy is extremely proud about her status as an air-breathing mammal. She's generally friendly and positive, but can be very fierce and mean when angered. She is prone to mood swings. Despite sometimes playing the level-headed character, she is also known to be a little crazy at times. In "Pre-Hibernation Week", when she believes SpongeBob has gone missing, she goes crazy trying to find him. Also, at the beginning of "Pressure" when she explains the acorn symbol on her suit, SpongeBob remarks — "I thought that meant you were nuts."

Sandy is funny, and speaks with a southern accent (although whether her accent is genuinely "Texan" is debatable); she is very angered about any negative comments about Texas.

Despite her love of Texas, she seems to have grown too fond of Bikini Bottom to go back to the city of Houston, Texas, where she is from. In a recent episode "Chimps Ahoy", she is afraid and unhappy at the idea of leaving the Bikini Bottom.

Sandy became one of SpongeBob SquarePants's best friends after saving him from a giant clam (The clam first tried to eat Sandy, but almost ate SpongeBob after he tried to save her), and she enjoys various activities with him (including karate). Sandy is also a friend to Patrick, but she is not too friendly with him and usually just plays with him because he is with SpongeBob. She is also believed to be friends with Larry - SpongeBob is sometimes jealous and sometimes thinks Sandy likes Larry better than him.

The nature of Sandy's relationship with SpongeBob is somewhat ambiguous. SpongeBob has brought her flowers on several occasions, and her official biography describes her as being "the apple of SpongeBob's eye (the only thing under the sea he likes better than his job at the Krusty Krab)." In Tea at the Treedome amorous music plays when Spongebob recalls Sandy's words. Spongebob's song in Ripped Pants has romantic lyrics. Once in a clip from "A Random Act Of SpongeBob" SpongeBob dropped Sandy a letter (with a bouquet of flowers) that called her the "smartest, prettiest squirrel in all of Bikini Bottom." It was on the "Surprise Sandy Day".

According to the episode, "Wormy", Sandy also has many pets, including caterpillars, snakes, crickets, mice, and birds, among others. A caterpillar named Wormy she owned once caused a riot among the citizens of Bikini Bottom, after it transformed into a butterfly and escaped her Treedome in a bubble.

Sandy's underwater home, the "Treedome" is a highly advanced domicile, hardly surprising given Sandy's vast knowledge of science and physics. It contains a tree, living quarters and many other things. It is the only place in Bikini Bottom where Sandy can be without her airsuit, although she did take it off in the episode "Pressure" while inside the Krusty Krab, albeit for a bet, which she lost due to requiring to breathe and almost drowning. Sandy's Treedome also exhibits normal weather conditions like snowing, shown in the episode "Survival of the Idiots".

Enables anything, living or non-living, to be transported to any location. This invention was seen in "SquidBob TentaclePants".

[edit] Molecular Seperator Ray

Seperates the molecules of something (like the fused SpongeBob and Squidward), and in the episode "SquidBob TentaclePants" seperates SpongeBob and Squidward, but then Squidward makes it combine all the surrounding creatures, including SpongeBob, Squidward, Patrick, Pearl, etc.

Allows communication to a nut. SpongeBob used it in "Chimps Ahoy" and the nut said "It's dark in here."

Makes "Nuttacinos" out of any nut of your choosing. Sandy demonstrates it with the nut SpongeBob communicated with, and with still having the Nut Communicator on, SpongeBob heard it die. Also seen in the episode "Chimps Ahoy".

A robot built to crack nuts. However, it can't do so, but it can peel bananas.

A machine SpongeBob took control of. SpongeBob remembers the incident by looking out the window, where there is a huge graveyard, stretching for as long as the eye can see, possibly indicating that SpongeBob killed thousands of people. This was mentioned in "Sandy's Rocket".

• For Halloween, Sandy was a goldfish in a bowl (her air helmet being the bowl). Nobody else understood it.
• Sandy introduced SpongeBob to Christmas. SpongeBob then introduced Christmas to the rest of Bikini Bottom.
• Sandy moved from Houston to Bikini Bottom, as revealed in The Essential Guide of SpongeBob.
• In "Karate Choppers", SpongeBob and Sandy are evenly matched in karate, but in "No Weenies Allowed", Sandy can easily defeat him, and in "Karate Island", Sandy says that her karate is better than SpongeBob's.

• The popular Nick show The Fairly Oddparents once made a reference to Sandy Cheeks. In an episode when Timmy Turner wishes himself a fish and meets Greg who is the King of Atlantis, the king mentions that his species enjoys an occasional underwater squirrel. (Note: He said this as he burped a squirrel tail out of his mouth.)
• Sandy was dressed in Beatrix Kiddo's famous yellow jump suit from the movie Kill Bill (which in turn was a reference to Bruce Lee's outfit in Game of Death), in the episode "Karate Island".
• Her wrestling of the giant clam in "Tea at the Treedome" is said to be a reference to Botticelli's The Birth of Venus.
• Sandy Cheeks dared SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward to go up on dry land in one episode, on the island of Bikini Atoll, just above Bikini Bottom. For this sequence the characters turned into live-action stick puppets, and Sandy's puppet looked like a Ty Beanie Baby Squirrel toy with a water helmet.
