G4 are a vocal troupe made famous by The X-Factor television programme in 2004. Their members are Jonathan Ansell, Matthew Stiff, Mike Christie and Ben Thapa. Their self-titled debut album reached Number One for Mother's Day weekend 2005.
Their name, G4, comes from the fact that they were all students at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and stands for Guildhall 4. The band were rumoured to be called G-Force, but over time changed to G4. However, the band denied that they had ever been known as G-Force during an interview on BBC Radio Bristol in November 2006. Coincidentally, the group opened a rollercoaster named G-Force during 2005 at Drayton Manor Theme Park.
The group are very versatile and have successfully performed everything from contemporary hits such as "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Yellow", "Beautiful", "Circle of Life" and "You're the Voice", to classical pieces like "Nessun Dorma", "La Donna E Mobile" (which they had their audience sing along to during the 2006 tour) and "Pearl Fishers' Duet", and even the swing classic "Fever".
G4's third album was released on 27th November, 2006. The album is titled Act Three and includes tracks such as "Somebody to Love", "O Sole Mio", "I Don't Like Mondays", "Volare" and "Silent Night". It also includes "No Matter What" with Stephen Gately.
In 2006, G4 made a special appearance at the American 4th of July party at Winfield House, home of the US Ambassador to the UK, and sang The Star-Spangled Banner.
On April 5, 2007, the group announced on GMTV that they will be splitting after their 2007 tour due to arguing within the band. It was rumoured that they were not getting on, and they wanted to remain friends, but staying in the group would have led to resentment[1][2].
