Ghadir(-e) Khum (Persian/Arabic: غدیر خم) or Ghadir(-e) Khur or Khu' is a location in Saudi Arabia half-way between Mecca and Medina of 200 miles.
It is historically famous for an event in which Mohammad gave a sermon: Hadith of the pond of Khumm, equally accepted by both Sunni and Shia Muslims, though the latter believe this as an indication of the appointment of Ali as Mohammad's successor.

[edit] Geographic position
Ghadir Khum (lit. Pond at Khumm) is in fact the name of the site that lies between the holy Muslim cities of Mecca and Medina where the event transpired. Here is a place on the Trade route between Syria and Yemen where travellers could replenish their resources of water in the most arid places of Arabia between Mecca and Medina.

On the 18th of Dhil-Hijjah, 10 AH (roughly 15th March, 632 C.E.), the caravan of Muhammad coming from his Farwell hajj stopped at Ghadir Khumm, along with a group of Muslims returning to Madinah from Hajj. Muhammad was returning from his last Hajj from the city of Mecca. Here he delivered a sermon, which is considered by Shia Muslims to be a clear designation of Ali's leadership of the Muslim community.
Shias celebrate this anniversary each year.
