I would appreciate some help in extending the part about Greece in the new article on the nuclear power phase-out. I have the politics of several other countries covered, but Greece is still missing. While this page looks good, I propose that the "Pending Tasks" template be incoporated into the main section proper. I think its too cumbersome as it stands. There should be a one-stop page for Greece-based Wikipedians which would allow us follow any edits in a much easier fashion. --Damac 13:27, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ano Dorio (about War of Independence) is in Greek on English wikipedia. Needs translation to prevent AfD.

Found Ano Dorio on WP:PNT. It's appears to be a description of the initial actions of the Pelleponesian front in the War of Independence. It looks like it's worth keeping (though perhaps under another name), but it's a bit beyond my ability to translate.

It's been listed on WP:PNT since Nov 17, and per WP:PNT policy can be AfD'd once it's 14 days old, which has long passed. Any native speakers interesting in translating it? Jamie 05:24, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Michali, do you see the heading "Pending tasks for Wikipedia:Greek Wikipedians' notice board" in the yellow shaded box? There is a seperate "edit" link there.

I was wondering if a Greek speaking Wikipedian could lend a breif helping hand.

In order to verify her inclusion on the List of best-selling music artists, an anonymous user has given this link. The user claims that this website (in Greek) claims that she has sold around 150 million records. I would be much happier if a registered Wikipedian could confirm this? Thanks! • She's a well known singer, famous in the 70's. She's still active today, but not to the same extent. The site in question is a listing of (most) new Greek albums, each with publicity information from the record company, a review and a track listing. The poster is likely referring to the page for Τραγούδι αλλιώτικο, her latest album. Amongst the publicity information for this album there, is information about her previous work, some of which has indeed sold well. The web page also claims that over her entire career (which started in the 60s), she has sold around 150 million "copies" (doesn't wkat kind: albums, singles, etc...). I have, in one sense, created the article Black Star (terrorist group). In another sense, I didn't create it at all. What on earth do I mean? Can someone with access to a good biographical dictionary or something like that please help to resolve confusion about these two early-20th-century guys? Are they the same person? If not, how are they related? Which of them was the archaeologist involved with the Antikythera mechanism? Which of them was Greek minister of culture at around 1904? Cuma, Cumae, Cyme, Kymi (Greece), Cuma (Aeolis), Cymaeans. Who can help tidy up this mess? There are three ancient cities of the same name, in Euboea, in Italy, and in Asia Minor, plus the corresponding modern town in Euboea too. Many misdirected links all over the place; Cuma is ostensibly about the Euboean one but then in fact talks all about the Italian one. Cymaeans seems to be intended to cover the Asia Minor one, but may be in fact confusing it with the Euboean one in some parts. Who has access to a good dictionary of classical antiquity? [edit] Improved locator maps for Greece

I've adapted a graphic template devised by our Croatian friends to create what will hopefully be an improved method of providing locator maps for places in Greece. It's no longer necessary to create a separate locator map for each location. Instead, all you need to do is to specify a set of coordinates for the location in question and add them to the following template:

{{location map|Greece|label=<place>|position=<left/right>|width=<number of pixels>|lat=<latitude>|long=<longitude>|caption=<whatever, leave blank if you don't want one>|float=<left/right/none>}}

Here's a practical example. Vergina is at coordinates 40.4811, 22.3136. We want a small 150px wide locator map without a caption, and with the town's name right-aligned. The map on the right is produced using this code:

See Template:Location map for more information and further instructions on syntax.

To obtain the coordinates for any given place, all you need to do is look it up on Multimap and look for the coordinates in the "Map Information" box; you will need the digital coordinates (the numbers with four decimal points), not the analogue ones (the traditional degrees, minutes and seconds). -- ChrisO 10:45, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

I donot know if there are any other Greeks or interested in Greek subjects who have studied or are affiliated with law subjects. I have created a new template and category for tagging articles whose name is from Greece, but which is missing that version of the name from the text. It is based on {{Arabic}}. It gathers all of these articles into the Category:Articles needing Greek script, which editors knowledgeable about Greek can add the appropriate transliterations. This will also help in finding appropriate articles in the Greek wikipedia. The template should be usable by those with little or no knowledge of Greek or the Greek alphabet. I have a question about the list of Greek place names. According to the criteria at the top of the article, the list includes:

• Places involved in the history of Greek culture, including but not limited to:
  • Historic Greek regions, including but not limited to: Ancient Greece ..., Hellenistic world ..., Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire ..., Ottoman Empire ..., Septinsular Republic ..., Modern Greece and Cyprus, and also what remains of treaty Greek minorities in Turkey
  • Places that have or had important Greek-speaking or ethnic Greek minorities or exile communities
  • Places of concern to Greek culture, religion or tradition, including but not limited to: Greek mythology, Greek Jews, Greco-Buddhism, Christianity until the Great Schism, Greek Muslims.
• Places whose official names include a Greek form.
• Places whose names originate from the Greek language, even if they were never involved in Greek history or culture.

This means that the list should not simply be a directory of the names of all places in the world in Greek. The names should have a direct connection to Greek culture and the Greek language. Right? Then why does the list include cities and countries like Saint Petersburg, Cape Town, Hamburg, Australia, Belgium, Berlin, Beirut, Wallachia, Bonn, Bucharest, Brazil, Brussels, Germany, Switzerland, etcetera? These place names bear no relation to the Greek language, and as such are not Greek place names. Right? Should they be removed from the list? Aecis^Brievenbus 22:53, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Some of those, did or still do have important "exile communities", or "immigrant communities". I am referring to Australia, Wallachia, Bucharest, Germany, Switzerland, also with a reservation for Cape Town. Also Beirut was part of the Hellenistic world. I won't rush into editing the article, which is why I raised the point on the talk page last week. Because there was no response and because I didn't expect a response in the foreseeable future, I decided to bring it up here. You are correct, the list of places I named above (and similar places and countries I didn't mention) should be divided in two: those with some link to the Greek history, culture, language and people, and those without links to Greece. The latter is imo the most "urgent" one, and would include places and countries like Belgium and Berlin. The problem I see, is that when you add places with no direct link to Greece and the Greek language, the list would become redundant with Wiktionary, List of country names in various languages and Names of European cities in different languages.
