"Grind" is the first song on Alice in Chains' self-titled album. The words "In the darkest hole, you'd be well advised not to plan my funeral before the body dies" seem to be Jerry Cantrell's response to the rumors that Alice in Chains had broken up in the time between the release of Jar of Flies in January 1994 and the self-titled album in November 1995. There were also rumors that Staley had died during that period, and many regard this opening line as Layne's answer to those who believed that. It was the first single off of the band's self-titled album and sets the tone for a particularly dark album in their catalog.
The video received heavy rotation on MTV in late 1995.
