Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School, commonly referred to as HML or Lakes, is a secondary school located at 7977 W 12th Avenue, in Hialeah, Florida on the boundary with the city of Miami Lakes, Florida; its principal is Karen L. Robinson.

HML was built in 1970 and opened its doors in 1971; the school was built to serve the newly formed community of Miami Lakes, Florida as well as the city of Opa-Locka and parts of Hialeah, Florida. HML was constructed in what was then a sparsely populated rural area in Northwestern Miami-Dade County, but over the years, the area has grown into a large suburban community. It is one of five high schools serving the densely populated Miami suburb of Hialeah, Florida.

Lakes was one of five high schools affected by the district's new zero-tolerance response to schools receiving failing grades on the state's FCAT examination. This has forced the district to administer tougher school policies, including the shortening of boundaries to lower school population and average class size. The district has also boosted funding for educational purposes against FCAT policy that schools receiving a lower grade also receive lower funding. The district has also threatened to remove ninth grade students from HML, as well as begin to cut extra curricular activities if it doesn't meet the county's standards within the next three years. As a response, the school's administration has implemented a longer school schedule with classes dedicated specifically to passing the FCAT examination as well as a uniform policy that began in the 2005-2006 school year. This has come as a shock to the local community as in recent years Lakes has been one of the best schools in the area in terms of education. It is believed that a recent increase in gang and criminal activity amongst youth in the area may be contributing to its poor performance. In the 2005-2006 school year Lakes rose from a D school to a C and scored 340 points on the FCAT school grading scale (a 22 point improvemment) and even surpassed rival Hialeah High School in the state standards.

Between 2006 and 2010, all high schools in the Miami-Dade County Public School System will shift over to the Collegiate-Honors System at which time the Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Top 10 system will be abolished. Instead, Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude honors will be awarded to the top members of each class. The Class of 2008 will be the last Lakes class to be designated a Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Top 10 students list. The change came about as a complete overhaul of the high school curriculum system modelled after the New York Public School System and implemented by the school board and superintendent. The system is already in place at the newly built John A. Ferguson High School and will be implemented at the new Ronald W Reagan Doral High School beginning Fall of 2006. The system will be gradually applied to every high school in the system over the next four years.

The school has a long, notable, athletic rivalry with nearby Hialeah High School. It also have a less formal rivalry with Barbara Goleman High School

[edit] Alma Mater

Who knows what the future brings
or where we'll be tomorrow.
Times to laugh and times to cry
Times to bind us closer.
But when our spirit's down,
One thing will prevail:
Hialeah-Miami Lakes,
Our Alma Mater hail!

[edit] Extracarricular Activities & The Activities Department

The Hialeah Miami-Lakes Activities Department (under the attentive and experienced eye of Ms. Gloria Rionda) is an endlessly busy one, with one of the highest standards in United Way donations as well as blood-drive donations, with such an active and charitable student body, the task of coordinating all the events is the duty of the elite Student Government Association (SGA). Lakes also has three student publications; Aeneid, the school yearbook (in publication of its 36th volume) under the tutelage of Ms. Michelle Arteaga which is aptly named after Vergil's epic of the Trojans founding of Rome, The Trojan Times, the school newspaper sponsored by Ms. Catherine Manfra, has recently published an opinion article that has drawn much attention for its straightforward perspective on racism and the recent replacement of the previous Drama professor, the newspaper is also currently taking part in a program in which an editor from the Miami Herald is making frequent visits to the journalism class and advising on the publication, and WHML News, the school television channel (sponsored by Mr. David Ruiz) which has provided sports footage for the local NBC frequently.

The two events are held an alternating years, Trick-or-Treat Street is held on even number graduation years (such as 2006) while Spring Festival is held on odd number graduation years (such as 2007). Trick-or-Treat Street is held in the courtyard around Halloween time and a haunted house is set up in the first floor of the 9 Building (the math wing). Spring festival is held around late March and early April.

Class and Club of the Year
Lakes has over 100 clubs of which around 70 are active every year in the school competitions such as club face off, Trojan Fest, Trick-or-Treat street etc. The class and club of the year competitions are school staples. This years Class of the year (2006) was the freshmen Class of 2009 with a total of 12,000 + community service points. The club with under 18 members was Interact (Miami Lakes Rotary club) with around 10,000 points and club with more than 18 members was the National Honor Society (NHS)with around 6,000 points. Drama Club won the second club face off award in a row.

JROTC
Lakes has a Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corps department, which is of the Army persuasion. The department, headed by MAJ Jose E. Miranda, is also known as the "Trojan Battalion." The JROTC has been recognized in state and national competitions many times during its existence at Lakes.

The Band Program
Recognized as a performing arts academy by The Miami-Dade County School Board, the national award-winning band program at Hialeah-Miami Lakes provides students with a musical education in the areas of wind, percussion, jazz, and guard studies. The Director of Bands is Mr. Eloys George, Jr. The Lakes Jazz Band has achieved consecutive straight superior ratings at the district and state levels for over a decade. Aside from continuously receiving distinguished ratings from the Florida Bandmasters Association, HML Bands have achieved Grand Champion status for the past seven consecutive years at band festivals around the continental United States, most notably at Fiesta-val Music Invitationals. The band has also been recognized as National Grand Champions for seven consecutive years.

[edit] Athletics Department

The Lakes Athletic Department has a notable and long reputation for its competitiveness and achievement. Noteworthy events include the State Football Champion Class of 1975 (and a total of ten appearances at states out of the schools 36 year history) as well as numerous state and district level championship victories in basketball, soccer, volleyball, football, baseball, bowling, swimming and golf, as well as a 1985 national baseball championship. Recent achievements in the 2005-2006 school year include girls waterpolo district runner up (second only to Krop HS) as well as the Boys Football teams status as district runner up in the most competitive district in the state (Class 6A- District 13), and state quarterfinals. Lakes has been the T-Cup victor (the football game held against arch-nemesis Hialeah High) for the better part of the competitions 36 year existence. Football is definitely the mainstay sport at Lakes, with the other sports also being quite popular. The Lakes home stadium is Hendricks stadium in Milander Park (which it shares with Hialeah, Goleman, Miami Springs and American.)

During the 2005 season the school had one of the most sought after QB in the state No. 1 Thaddeus Lewis (who now plays for the Blue Devils of Duke University). This past year, Lakes once again had one of the most nationally sought after players in RB in No. 5 Armando Allen who committed to play for the Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame.
