Hirakud is a town and a notified area committee in Sambalpur District in the Indian state of Orissa. It is famous for the Hirakud Dam built over the Mahanadi River. Hirakud is also an Industrial township with number of Industries. Located 15 km from the nearest city of Sambalpur, it is a quiet town with a large portion of the population engaged in various Industries located here.

As of 2001 India census,^GRIndia Hirakud had a population of 26,397. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Hirakud has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 60%. In Hirakud, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
