There's a Wikipedia:WikiProject Rugby union that you probably don't know about. The league equivalent is working quite nicely but the union one only has five participants. Please stop placing things in multiple categories, when one category is a subcategory of the other.

Wikipedia Category Help has the guideline for this. If every train station in Japan was listed in the Category:Railway stations in Japan category, it would be huge. That is why they are separated into prefectures. Neier 12:38, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm sure it would be huge, but also hugely useful I believe. If the wiki-servers have the capacity to accommodate them technically, I can't see a "huge problem". At least the main stations (e.g. Kokura station) should appear in the top category I think. --Historian 23:48, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Yes you are correct that there exists other undergradute Master of Arts degrees - now we have an issue with a very long bracket which doesn't conform with Wikipedia naming conventions and a page that is now in need of serious cleanup. Unless you object I am going to split the page in two - and re-create Master of Arts (Scotland) as a page just about Scotland and then create a page on Master of Arts (England) which might provide a way that would allow this to make sense. Thanks for the idea and it is time to improve it by making a Master of Arts (Postgraduate) page and then a Master of Arts (disambiguation) page. Davidkinnen 13:22, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Not sure about that new cat, but all these types of cats are in their infancy, so a Wikipedia-wide standard is still a while away. You tagged Image:Caius shield.png as "PD-old" on the grounds that "it dates back hundreds of years". I'm sure that the blazon of the college's coat of arms dates back that far, but is this particular depiction of the coat of arms that old? --Carnildo 03:16, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

• My dear Carnildo. I don't know is the short answer. But since the coat of arms is made up of the arms of Edmund Gonville who founded Gonville Hall in 1348 (left side) and John Caius who refounded the College to make Gonville and Caius College in 1557 (right side), I should say it's highly probable that the author of "this particular depiction" (however defined) died more than 100 years ago, wouldn't you? Unless you are going to say that the image is only as old as digital image scanning, in which case all digitally scanned images should be removed from wikipedia forthwith - a rather ridiculous conclusion don't you think? If you have an alternative suggestion for a tagging please let me know what it is, so I can keep this image out of reach of your bot! Thank you. --Historian 07:31, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

• I suggest you read up on coat of arms and blazon. Basically, the canonical form of a coat of arms is the blazon: the text description of the arms. This is what is provided when a person or group is granted arms. There are infinitely many possible ways of depicting a blazon, and each new depiction establishes its own copyright. Image:Caius shield.png could have been created in 1557, or it could have been created last year. Without a source, there's no way of knowing. Further, since it's quite possible for an artistic Wikipedian to create their own depiction of the blazon, there's no fair-use claim for a coat of arms. --Carnildo 08:06, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

• I see. So your suggestion for tagging the image in a satisfactory way is what exactly? And by the way, it seems to me that several of the other Cambridge college coat of arms images have been created by User:Lupin, or so he says. The images created by User:Lupin are just fine. Since he drew them (presumably based on the approprate blazons), he's got copyright on them, and can release them under the GFDL or whatever other license he wants. I'd suggest finding the official text description of the arms, then asking someone like Lupin or me to draw up the arms. I believe in naming bots after what they do, not after who owns them. Originally, OrphanBot was designed for one task: orphaning no-source and no-license images so admins could delete them easily. I see. Well, one of the things that this bot does is cause widespread irritation, so "Irritatingbot" might be a better name. I believe you are right about the mess that some bots can do, anyways I found the informations in template to be very useful, in fact I used them for the italian stub about Kitakyushu. The National Archives cannot possibly be the "National" Archives of the UK, because Scotland has its own National Archives (and many would contend that the UK is a state (a political organisation), not a nation (a cultural attribute)). It could be moved to National Archives (England and Wales), but that is pedantic, and thoroughly contrary to disambiguation practice here at Wikipedia: see William III of England for example: he was not the 3rd of Scotland, and we don't dab using William III of England, Scotland and Ireland, even though that is more accurate. --Mais oui! 07:53, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Well for that matter I think it should never have changed from Public Record Office and Historical Manuscripts Commission which were its better-named predecessors. If you look at the web page of the organization it describes itself (unhelpfully) as "The National Archives" and states that it holds the "records of the UK government from Domesday to the present". If you just call it "National Archives" that is too wide and invites confusion with the USA etc., but "National Archives (England)" or "National Archives (England and Wales)" don't sound right to me either. To me "National Archives (UK)" is the least bad option. But it is a mess. --Historian 14:05, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

I just wanted to check with you that this reference that you added to the Beato article is correct:

because that title, "'I been to keep up my position': Felice Beato in Japan, 1863-1877" is pretty strange, and in searching various resources I couldn't find it (though I did find Reflecting Truth...). Assuming the title is right, though, I guess it's a quote from Beato, who was known by his British contemporaries for his "amusing" manner of speaking ("I am delight!"). I left some notes to the person who was changing my work as he wanted a different set of categories than I did. I will see how that discussion proceeds. My work was to have a 'people' category for foreign diplomats, military assigned to China; an expatriate category for visitors and long term foreign residents of China; and a citizenship category in those cases where people became citizens of China. This is how 'foreigners' in other countries are organized so I did not see why China should be an exception. This organiztion works not only to distinguish people in the destination country, but also to to distinguish them in their origin country. Thanks Hmains 03:32, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Following a successful period of consultation WikiProject Scotland has now been launched. As a participant in the Scottish Wikipedians' notice board I wonder if you may be interested in this new endeavour too? If so, please sign-up here. The WikiProject will be replacing some of the functions of the notice board, especially those in the lower half.

While I am here, please also have a look at the new Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Scotland and give it a "Watch". It was started up by User:Visviva a few days ago, after long being mooted at the notice board, and effectively replaces all the AfD listings at the notice board. Being a transclusion of all the on-going discussions it is a much more useful tool.

Even if you do not want to spend too much time on the WikiProject, please give it a "Watch" and feel free to contribute to Talk page discussions: the more contributors the merrier.

Hi Historian, I know from the rugby project that you have a good knowledge on Japanese rugby, recently a user added a team template to all the Top League teams, but as far as I know most of the away jerseys were left as unknown. The templates added were a little outdated, as there is now template:rugby team which has optional information and is thinner.
