L'album Britney è stato pubblicato nel novembre del 2001. Il primo singolo estratto fu I'm a Slave 4 U, pezzo presentato anche ai Video Music Awards del 2001. Il secondo singolo estratto fu Overprotected, dove la Spears canta la sua voglia di essere indipendente. Duetta anche con Pharrel Williams in Boys . Per la prima volta collabora nella composizione delle le canzoni e usa generi musicali diversi. In un pezzo collabora anche il suo fidanzato, il cantante Justin Timberlake. L'album ha venduto meno dei precedenti. Nel 2002 la cantante fu invitata a Sanremo dove presentò il nuovo singolo: I'm Not a Girl Not Yet a Woman. Sempre nel 2002, la Spears recita nel film Crossroads, film che è risultato un mezzo flop al botteghino. La performance di Britney fu aspramente criticata, e le comportò la vincita di un Razzie Award come "Peggior attrice".
