Fritz Leiber

Fritz Reuter Leiber Jr. (24 dicembre 1910 - 5 settembre 1992) è stato un importante scrittore statunitense di fantasy e fantascienza.

La sua popolarità sia tra i fan che fra i colleghi scrittori è stata notevole, e molti suoi romanzi e racconti hanno vinto il premio Hugo e il premio Nebula. Figlio di due attori shakespeareani, Fritz Reuter Leiber Sr. e Virginia (née Bronson), Leiber è sempre stato affascinato dal teatro e ha descritto compagnie shakespeareane itineranti in storie quali No Great Magic e Four Ghosts in Hamlet, e ha creato un personaggio di attore/produttore come protagonista del romanzo A Specter is Haunting Texas. Un’interessante caratteristica de Il grande tempo è che, nonostante la storia riguardi una guerra temporale fra due fazioni che cambiano continuamente la storia, tutta l’azione si svolge in una piccola bolla di spazio-tempo isolato, circa delle dimensioni di un palcoscenico teatrale con una manciata di personaggi. Molte delle opere migliori di Leiber sono racconti, specialmente horror. Per racconti come The Girl With the Hungry Eyes, e You're All Alone (noto anche come The Sinful Ones), è considerato uno dei precursori del moderno genere dell’horror urbano.

Fra le opera più famose di Leiber ci sono le storie di Fafhrd e il Gray Mouser, scritte in un arco di cinquant’anni. La prma di queste, Two Sought Adventure, apparve sulla rivista Unknown nel 1939. I protagonisti di queste storie sono un’improbabile coppia di di eroi, Fafhrd e il Gray Mouser, le cui avventure si svolgono principalmente dentro e nei dintorni della suggestiva città di Lankhmar. (Fafhrd è ispirato allo stesso Leiber e il Mouser al suo amico Harry Fischer.) Queste storie furono le progenitrici di molti degli elementi tipici del genere sword and sorcery. Esse sono anche uniche fra le opera del genere in quanto nel corso delle storie i due eroi maturano, si assumono delle responsabilità e infine abbandonano la vita di avventurieri per sposarsi. È stato notato che la città di Ankh-Morpork del ciclo del Mondo Disco di Terry Pratchett possiede più di una vaga somiglianza con Lankhmar (dichiaratamente ammesso dallo stesso Pratchett con l'evidente citazione nella scena di apertura del primo romanzo della serie che raffigura il Bruno Furetto e il suo gigantesco compagno barbaro).

Leiber sposò Jonquil Stephens il 16 gennaio, 1936, e il loro figlio Justin Fritz Leiber nacque nel 1938. La morte di Jonquil nel 1969 spinse lo scrittore nell’alcolismo per tre anni, ma poi ritorno alla sua vecchia forma con un romanzo fantasy ambientato nella San Francisco dei giorni nostri, Our Lady of Darkness – serializzata nella Rivista di Fantasy and Science Fiction come The Pale Brown Thing (1977) – nella quale le città sono il terreno di nascita di un nuovo tipo di elementali evocabili con l’oscura arte del megapolicromansia. Il racconto sui mondi paralleli Catch that Zeppelin! (1975) aggiunse un’altro Nebula e Hugo alla sua collezione.

Leiber è stato pesantemente ispirato da Howard Phillips Lovecraft e Robert Graves nelle prime due decadi della sua carriera. A partire dalla fine degli anni cinquanta fu sempre più influenzato dai lavori di Carl Gustav Jung, in particolare dai concetti di anima e ombra e spesso questi concetti sono menzionati apertamente nelle sue opere. Negli ultimi anni della sua vita, Leiber sposò la sua seconda moglie, Margo Skinner, una giornalista e poetessa sua amica per molti anni. I fans gli hanno tributato il premio Gandalf alla Worldcon del 1975, e nel 1981 l’associazione Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America glia ha assegnato il Grand Master. Leiber scrisse una breve autobiografia che può essere trovata nell’antologia The Ghost Light (1984). Un biografia critica, "Witches of the Mind," è stata pubblicata dalla casa editrice Necronomicon Press. Egli recitò inoltre in alcuni film, una volta con il padre ne Il gobo di Notre Dame (1939).
