[edit] Jesus
A new editor is making rather bold claims about Judaism's view of Jesus, and also insisting he knows Jesus' Hebrew name. Could you possibly take a look at Talk:Jesus#Hebrew_name_of_Yehoshua_or_Yeshua and Talk:Judaism's view of Jesus? I'd appreciate it. Jayjg (talk) 17:52, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Walther Rauff aka Walter Rauff
There were many inaccurancies on the Walther Rauff entry which I have tried to correct. Poor Simon Wisenthal never got it 100% right. In the meantime, the CIA has released new documents concerning his case. As you know I met Rauff in 1979. He was definitely a full Colonel (SS-Standartenführer when he surrendered to the Americans in Italy). See http://www.fas.org/sgp/news/2002/05/nara050802.html; --Bemister 13:41, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Birthright Israel
Although Wikipedia claims to be a source of unbiased information, it is impossible for any of the entries on this site to be completely free of ideological underpinnings. That can certainly be said of your entry for Birthright Israel, and on your userpage you openly identify with Zionist ideology. In the past, I had updated the Birthright Israel entry to give a more accurate picture of the program; unfortunately, I don't have as much time as you do to keep it updated. These updates were differant from my more recent one, which was meant as satire and as such wasn't appropriate for this website.
By the way, I originally thought the person removing my updates were a paid employee/special software utilized by Birthright to maintain their image. That being said, perhaps you can acknowledge that some changes can be made to the entry, particularly expanding on the criticism section which doesn't get anywhere near the heart of the issue: why is it the birthright of ashkenazic Jews to immigrate to Israel, but Palestinian refugees who were violently displaced from their homes are not allowed? I'll admit that my viewpoints are ideological as much as yours are, and perhaps the roots of our beliefs may both lie in the Jewish tradition. My interpertation of Judaic morality, however, is opposed to the nationalism, ethnic supremacism, and the use of military violence that have become core tenets of Zionist practice.
I'm not going to waste my time updating this entry on my own since it's clear that you have enough time on your hands to keep taking changing it. However, in the spirit of the old Yiddush folk saying "Where there's two Jews, there's three opinions", perhaps you would be willing to make some concessions (unlike Israel at Camp David).
[edit] Birthright
Another thought: I just learned of a program called Birthright Unplugged, which allows non-Israeli Jews to visit Palestinian territories as well as giving Palestinians a chance to visit Israel. I will most likely be making an addition to the Birthright Israel entry to discuss this program.

[edit] AFD Helper script
I'm wondering if there's any way you'd be able to quickly write up a modified version of this script for me so that:
- not only will it post my delete/keep/etc votes but also use voting symbols.

Keep because blah.
Hope you know what I mean. Thanks if you can do this, please answer at my talk. — nathanrdotcom (Got something to say? Say it.) 04:09, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

A few people have expressed a dislike for this system on the AfDs. I know I've gotten a message or two about it already. Is there any way we can disable these icons? Metros232 23:29, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- Well I went in and set my own value to false for icons in my monobook, but is there any way we can make the default setting as false for them instead of true? Metros232 23:41, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
-
- I thought that would be the resolve in the end, but I thought more people would know about it and therefore be able to make an opinion if it were defaulting to true at first. Now default is false. jnothman talk 03:43, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. The concerns expressed were valid, I think: AfD is not a vote and it is the text of the argument which matters. Keep up the good work, though :-) Just zis Guy you know? 10:34, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Votes
I wonder if you'd consider not using symbols to label your comments on WP:AFD. It really isn't a vote, but your use of symbols might inadvertently emphasize the false impression that it is. --Tony Sidaway 23:23, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- Good point. I thought I'd give it a trial- see what the reaction was. I assumed it would be that the default should be set off, which it now is. jnothman talk 03:41, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] European Union of Jewish Students
Hello Jnothman, I have noticed that you were quite active in articles related to Judaism including the article name in the title and this is why I am asking for some help. - Thanks for your help. I was very surprise late last night at the amount of Jewish-related articles in the AfD, and I looked for someone with more experience in the subject to put their 2-cents. Thanks again. Gadig 20:12, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Jnothman FYI
Joel: If you look at http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/filmnetwork/U3608045?s_fromedit=1&s_typedarticle=edit you will see an updated article, which I am reluctant to use myself for Wikipedia, in case I break the rules concerning self authorship. I was recently informed by Fremantle Grundy's of the release of another title I had forgotten, and I was unaware of titles registered by the Australian National Film and Audio Archives, which did not exist in my (very happy) days in Sydney. If you feel it is appropriate, please feel free to do so yourself. I also noticed there is a new reference at http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/biography/rauff.html I have decided to donate my 1979 still photograph to the Jewish Virtual Library so if you would like one for Wikipedia please let me know--Bemister 12:55, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] change to bibleverse
Please see the discussion atTalk:Nazirite#bibleverse. User:SpaceFalcon2001 is replacing bibleverses with direct links to chabad.org. I do not favor either translation, but I would insist that it be within bibleverse. Having it as a direct link can cause great problems if the site would shut down or change its system. Can you please make it possible to link to chabad.org through bibleverse to avoid this controversy? Jon513 20:30, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
Not worth it!
I wrote sonmething simular and it got deleted.

[edit] bibleverse template
Hi, I'm assuming that you are in charge of the website that the bibleverse template links to?
Would it be possible for you to add the New American Bible (NAB) and New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) to the list, as both of them are major versions of the bible.
The NAB can be found online at http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/ The NRSV can be found at http://bible.oremus.org (e.g. Matthew 1:1 (NRSV)) Clinkophonist 18:37, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
It seems that all of the machon mamre links are dead. I suspect that biblgateway has removed them as a source. Any ideas? Jon513 16:35, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for adding the NAB and NRSV; one thing though:
- You seem to have the oremus links backwards-
- Instead of ....version=nrsv
- Your linking thing produces of ....version=nsrvae
- And
- instead of "New revised standard version" in the dropdown list
- you have "New standard revised version"
The second isn't a big issue, but the first means that the links don't work. Clinkophonist 17:45, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Discussion on citing the bible
Hi - thanks for your comments on Wikipedia:Citing sources/Bible, for the work you did on the PHP and the bibleverse template, and especially for your willingness to donate the work under the GPL. Just wanted to clarify that my concerns on the template were initiated by some replacements on pages I watch of internal links to articles about a chapter of the bible to external links. And at this point, I think the purpose of the discussion (or at least my purpose in starting the page) is not to get rid of {{bibleverse}} but to modify it so that it produces a result that better meets the NPOV needs of wikipedia (while favoring GFDL sources where possible).
I like your suggestions - though as a result of my review of stuff I am liking biblebrowser better, even with its cluttered design (for the non-initiate). There has been some concerns about how many hits adding link from wikipedia will add to the websites under discussion. Do you have any statistics on how many hits your redirect at *.edu.au is getting?
Finally - not knowing much about PHP or how it interacts with wikipedia. Is it possible to have something like the ISBN thing - where when you click on the link it takes to a page with links to different sources - similar to the combination proposal - and allow one to skip to a specific source based on a user setting in their .js or .css file. Someone suggested this - and it seems like a pretty good idea to me. Trödel 17:12, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thx - moved to talk page per your request - will respond later - sorry about that - wanted to make sure you got the message so that is why I put it here --Trödel 17:52, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] ABS Stats
Hi, it would be a great idea if you were to do this. The ABS' site is a mess and if would be nice if we could automatically dive in and extract the stats we want. If you're just talking about suburb statistics to start off with, I figure at the bare minimum you should retrieve the population, area, pop density, percentage of aboriginals/torres strait islanders and maybe the three most common nationalities/places of origin/whatever they call it. Perhaps average income as well. - ҉ Randwicked ҉ 09:41, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
-
- B01 - Population, area, pop density. So is ATSI percentage.
- All four.
- B03 - top (two?) age brackets
- Probably just the under-15 and over-65 figures. Those are the ones I see in national statistics most often.
- B05 - is this where you wanted me to extract most common nationalities from? ancestry based on parent? I'm a little confused about how to understand these tables: just use the last column? When I calculate percentages, does it include "not stated"? Does "most common" mean top 5, or all those above a certain percentage?
- This one has figures for both parents. That probably makes it too complicated for an infobox.
- B06 - or did you want me to extract nationalities from here?
- I'd use this, just listing the top three or four nationalities by percentage (I don't know how hard that will be to calculate). Don't forget B08. The top three languages would be useful as well.
- B07 - or is this where I should take nationality from??
- B10 - get the top few religions- top by perccentage, or top 4? Count Christianity as one group or as individual sects, or both?
- This might be getting too complex to include. But maybe Christianity with the three largest subsets, then the three next biggest faiths (including 'no religion').
- B18 - dwelling structure? percentage totals?
- B22 - unemployment rate
- B23 - non-school qualifications? percentages?
- B33 - median weekly household income? median weekly individual income? mean household size?
- I wouldn't bother about the rest to start. I'm going to take this to the AWNB to get more opinions as well. - ҉ Randwicked ҉ 02:44, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, do you think you could mine all the census designated places out of the ABS stats so we could use them to make sure we have articles on all the towns in Australia. [edit] Think Again
Local legends include it being used as a base station for contacting aliens! But the probably the most likely explanation for its isolated position and its santitised, hospital-like interior is that it was intended as a last bolt hole for Adolf Hitler and other top Nazis, a refuge to where they could escape and possibly undergo plastic surgery before being shipped to a new life with a new identity in the North or South Americas. (a link to an article on a Geocities web site was included, but it is the only English source of this information.)
I have removed these paragraphs twice on the basis of unverifiability and general sense of nonsense. jnothman talk 03:05, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
