KAEF is a television station in Arcata, California that serves the Eureka, California television market. The station runs programming from the ABC network. KAEF is a full-power television station that operates with 141 kw of power and is owned by Bluestone Television.
KAEF began broadcasting on August 1, 1987 as KREQ-TV. Initially, it was affiliated with the Fox network. Since the Eureka market still did not have an ABC affiliate, ABC programming was carried in part by stations KVIQ and KIEM in addition to their primary affiliations with NBC and CBS, respectively. In addition, local cable systems offered Redding, California ABC affiliate KRCR-TV on cable.
Around 1989, KREQ changed its call letters to KAEF. The station maintained its Fox affiliation until around 1994, at which time KBVU, the area's current Fox affiliate, signed on the air.
Today, the station is essentially a repeater station for KRCR in Redding, California. KAEF-TV currently does not offer local newscasts.
