[edit] History
The station was founded in 1956 by William B. Smullin of California Oregon Broadcasting, Inc., owners of KOBI-TV Channel 5M (now known as NBC 5) in Medford, Oregon and KOTI-TV Channel 2K (now known as NBC 2) in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Purchased by Lamco Communications of Texas in 1995, KRCR was operated by California Broadcasting, Inc., run by general manager Bob Wise, until 2004, when the station was sold to current owners Bluestone Television. Then in December 2006, the station was sold (along with 12 other Bluestone stations) to Diamond Castle Holdings, a New York-based private equity firm.
The station also operates an Eureka ABC affiliate KAEF channel 23. It operated a local cable-only WB affiliate KIWB, but that station was sold to rival Catamount Broadcasting following the merger between the WB and UPN to form the new CW Network. KRVU was previously a UPN affiliate, but now is a My Network TV affiliate.
KRCR was one of very few ABC affiliates that broadcast on channel 7, but didn't use any kind of Circle 7 logo. However, that changed when they debuted their new set and their new logo on April 11, 2006.

[edit] Academic Challenge
The station broadcasts a high school quiz bowl program called Academic Challenge on Sundays at 6:30 PM. It began in 1998 and had been hosted ever since then by Gary Gunter. In 2004, the KRCR directors decided to change the format of the show in order to decrease the number of games. It is unknown why this decision was made, or what show will be on during its time slot in weeks with no games. News anchor Tim Mapes took over hosting duties in 2005 after Gunter left.
A show similar to this one called Challenge of the Minds aired on fellow Redding station KIXE-TV during the 1990's.
