[edit] Technical Information
[edit] KTVG
Licensed to Grand Island, its analog broadcasts are seen on UHF channel 17. It operates with an Effective Radiated Power of 3.89 megawatts. It also carries a digital signal on channel 19, also on the UHF dial -- operating with an ERP of only 5.3 kilowatts under a Special Temporary Authority.

[edit] Both Stations
KTVG is owned by Hill Broadcasting Company, Inc. and KSNB is owned by Colins Broadcasting Company, Inc. Both stations are operated by Pappas Telecasting Companies under Local Marketing Agreements. [edit] On Cable and Satellite
[edit] KTVG
KTVG can be found on Charter Communications in Kearney and Grand Island. Galaxy Cablevision customers in Grand Island and Hall County also have access to the station. KTVG is also the choice station for Antilles Wireless customers in Kenesaw. All of these carry the station on channel 4. KTVG can also be found on Charter channel 3 in Hastings and Glenwood Communications channel 17 in Blue Hill. Lastly, Great Plains Cable Television customers in Hayes Center can find the station on channel 29.
[edit] KSNB-TV
Meanwhile, KSNB is on Time Warner Cable channel 4 in Lincoln and channel 7 in Superior.
[edit] Both Stations
DirecTV and Dish Network can only choose one station to carry. They have both chosen KTVG to serve the area's customers. DirecTV carries the station on channel 17 while Dish Network carries the station on channels 17 and 7553.
[edit] History
[edit] KTVG
A construction permit was granted on April 10, 1986 for the station. However, the station did not take to the air until 1993. It has served as a Fox network affiliate since its sign-on. It was the market's only Fox station before KSNB made the switch from ABC to Fox in the 1990s. KTVG serves as the primary station.
[edit] KSNB-TV
The station first began its broadcasting operation in 1965 as KHTL. At the time, it operated as an ABC affiliate and was part of the Nebraska Television Network or NTN alongside KHGI-TV (then as KHOL-TV), KWNB-TV (then as KHPL-TV) and KHQL in Albion. During the 1970s the chain was rebranded Nebraska Television or NTV. It was also around this time that the station adopted its current call letters, KSNB-TV. During the 1980s, the station would remain an ABC affiliate but its was then that KBGT (the former KHQL/KCNA) would be spun off and become KCAN. That station now operates as Lincoln-based KLKN, owned and operated by Citadel Broadcasting. During the mid 1990s, KSNB would make the switch from ABC over to Fox. KSNB serves as the satellite station -- despite certain sources saying otherwise.
[edit] Both Stations
Aside from serving the area as Fox affiliates, during the early 2000s they would pick up the secondary PAX affiliation. That network began as PAX, then became i: Independent Television on July 1, 2005 and then became ION Television on January 29, 2007. It was also during this time that the station carried programs from UPN -- that was until that network came together with The WB to form the The CW Television Network, which launched on September 18, 2006. The CW can be seen on KCWL channel 51.
[edit] Trivia
- The former KHTL call letters once used by KSNB, is also the airport code for the Roscommon County Blodgett Memorial Airport in the town of Houghton Lake, in Roscommon County, Michigan.
- The KTVG call letters were once used by NBC network affiliate KTVH in Helena, Montana from 1979 to 1985.
- The letters KSN in the KSNB call letters is a swift reference to a chain of NBC network affiliates across Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, formerly known as the Kansas State Network. Those stations include KSNW in Wichita and its satellite stations, KSNC in Great Bend, KSNG in Garden City and KSNK in McCook, their only Nebraska station. There are also two other stations formerly affiliated with KSN, KSNT in the Kansas state capital of Topeka and KSNF in Joplin, Missouri. All of these stations except KSNF are owned and operated by Montecito Broadcast Group. KSNF is owned and operated by Nexstar Broadcasting Group.
- The KSNB call letters were at one point, also used by a radio station in St. Louis Park, Minnesota near Minneapolis. That station is now known as locally-owned Air America Radio AM radio station KTNF.
- KTVG and KSNB at one point had a fifth repeater station, WSWS-CA 13 in North Platte before it joined ABC and KHGI/KWNB in 2005.
- Vincent F. Barresi is the Director of Sales & Marketing and Vice President & General Manager of the four stations. He formerly held only the position of VP and GM at WKBS-TV in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Licensed to the town of Burlington, New Jersey, he help run the station during the prime of its popularity. On August 31, 1983, its then owner Field Communications returned the station's license to the Federal Communications Commission after the company failed to find a buyer for the station. Channel 48 would return to the air in 1992 under a new license as WGTW-TV. Today, it operates as a TBN owned and operated station. Barresi would go on to hold the same position at CBS affiliate WTSP in St. Petersburg, Florida before leaving in 1991. He may have joined other stations before joining KTVG/KSNB/KHGI/KWNB in the late 1990s or early 2000s. WKBS was greatly known as a former Kaiser Broadcasting station. [1]
