List of cities in Sweden

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of towns with city status in Sweden (Swedish: stad, plural städer). The year indicates the year they were established or when they were granted a royal charter.

Legally and administratively, the term "city" is no longer used in Sweden, as the only existing form of local government is the municipality (kommun). However, before the municipal reform of 1971, there were 135 cities with a royal charter. (See city status in Sweden)

Some differences existed for the requirement to be a chartered city: the towns in the southern Swedish Scanian lands were granted their privileges under the Danish Crown, which had slightly lesser requirements. (See Towns of Scania)
