[edit] For a game to be listed here:

1) The game must be linked to an internal article that discusses the controversy(s) surrounding the game. The article should also be well written. That means no badly written articles about a game just for the purpose of posting it here.

2) External links in the External Links section are okay but but not as a substitute for an internal article.

3) A brief description of the game's controversy, in parenthesis, is also encouraged.

4) When adding games to this list, please keep them in alphabetical order.

[edit] Grice's changes

I deleted the catagories because some of the "controversies" surrounding some of the games overlapped into other catagories. They were also ambiguous and, therefore, misleading (such as catagorizing Pokemon as "occult"). I think brief descriptions in parenthesis is better. Grice 13:29, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)

While I don't mind some of them (like changing the headings), removing the introduction and inserting references to Wikipedia itself is not appropriate, so I reverted those changes. -- Netoholic @ 16:10, 2004 Nov 1 (UTC)
The reason why I removed examples given in the introduction were because I could not find such incidents at those games articles, otherwise I would have left them. If I overlooked such incidents at those articles, then go ahead and restore them. Grice 22:03, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] ideas

I've been thinking of ideas to help improve this page, so that it can be more informative. The problem with the first idea I had was that, while it does help make the page more informative, one of the problems with the page was that it was just a list of internal links and my changes don't improve this.

One improvement would be if each game briefly described what caused the uproar, the merits of that uproar if neccessary, and who the uproar came from, a link to an internal article may not be neccessary (this page is, after all, an internal article). The examples given in the earlier version of the introduction could thus be restored. A second alternative would be to completely rewrite this page into a real article, rather than just a list of games, talking about controversial games throughout history (someone more informed than myself would have to do that). Grice 11:51, 2 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I agree, if we can write a one-paragraph summary of the controversy, that would be best. Leave it to the individual articles to go into depth on it. I'm also fine (for now) getting rid of the category headings and making this simply alphabetical. -- Netoholic @ 17:57, 2004 Nov 2 (UTC)
Do you feel that it would be appropriate to list this article as a stub? Grice 23:08, 2 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Maybe video games should be removed

Video game controversy already has a much more detailed list of controversial video games. The video game portions of this should be removed or put into that entry, and this should probably be a page dedicated to controversial non-video games such as Dungeons & Dragons and role playing games.

I agree, the list of video games in this article is redundant. Cpc464 11:45, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
I agree, Video games have a whole page of themselves. No use trying to keep track of things here too. Mausy5043 14:05, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
I agree about moving video games out as well --Duozmo 16:20, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
I think a separate and comprehensive article should be started that lists just controversial video games by types of controversy, which can be linked to from both this article and the Video Game Controversy Article. If someone would like to start such an article, I'd be happy to help flesh it in. --164.107.92.120 00:06, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] SO dumb

SO a charecter gets spanked. Big deal. And who cares about that scene in Tales of Symphonia. And why cant a woman spank her sons as punishment? So retarded.

[edit] Hunting??

Should we talk about hunting in this article? Or just Trophy hunting perhaps? Jacoplane 15:53, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Hunting is an honorable tradition of humankind for most of existence and so is not controversial amongst main stream, practical, and intelligent people. Thank you. --164.107.223.217 18:10, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wind Waker?

I'm not sure that controversy in the manner exhibited in 2002 over Zelda's new look really qualifies as the type of controversy discussed in the article. Thoughts? Kertrats | Talk 17:19, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Pokémon

Pokémon controversial for promoting evolution? Please tell me this was not in the United States. But I fear I'm not so lucky... — JIP | Talk 16:30, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Unnecessary clarification

"Hentai games (hentai (which really means pervert in Japanese) is pornographic anime)"

The statement in the second brackets is, while true, completely irrelevant here. Removed it. 213.172.234.112 12:30, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Modifications on Germany

I modified the part about Germany to fit a more NPOV.

I re-wrote some parts of this section, but this section is still POV. Someone with more information about German indexing system should clean it up, especially since there should be a clear seperation between banning and indexing. - Jack's Revenge 22:45, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sonic CD

I can not see anything that is concidered offensive in the soundtrack, especialy in "BOSS!"

"The war began, with earth trembling fear"
"Bold, supreme and cold hearted"
"The distance grows little by little"
"Wow! The power you possess is increadible"
"He (Refering to Sonic) Doesn't stand a chance!"

The only other line is the repeating of "Work that Giant Mech, come now." and unless saying "war" has suddenly turned taboo in the last few seconds I don't see an issue. --Conan-san 16:54, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Where the heck is Blood in this list?

A list of controversial and violent video games without Blood? 80.200.213.219 15:45, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Anonymous IP removing Links

I have found 2 anonymous users removing games from this list. I looked up those 2 games and found court proceedings with them, so I reinstated them with citations. Those kinds of edits are gonna get more and more so keep watching. --Voidvector 20:36, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hooligans: Storm Over Europe

IMHO, one of the most dodgy games ever produced. You take control of gangs of soccer hooligans as they go on rampages around football grounds in Europe, smashing up pubs, shops and the public. Should definitely be on the list.

[edit] Bully?

Why is Bully's problem listed as promotion of bullying? It's been said over and over that nobody in the game can bully freely and not get punished!

I agree. Somebody needs to find a source explaining this and add a more correct description as to why it's controversial.--Veemonkamiya 00:39, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Bully (video game) <-- There is a huge "Controversy" section on this page with citations. "promoting bullying" might be poorly stated. --Voidvector 00:56, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] About free games not being listed

I removed the games JFK Reloaded and SCMR!. They:

  • Are not commercial; the authors don't risk any loss
  • They are not very notable.

Every bored and sick man can make a controversial game. But not much people will care. This list is just used for advertising.--=='''[[User:E-Magination''' ==]] 14:51, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Then maybe there should be an explanation that this list only affects commercial games. As far as I know "JFK: Reloaded", for instance, was commercial at release and received some media attention as well. - Jack's Revenge 17:06, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
About where in the Final Fantasy game does alleged spanking scene occur? --24.154.173.243 01:36, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Everquest, World of Warcraft, and Lineage

Why is the fact that you can become "addicted", which you can't, listed under "Social Issues" (or whatever the heading was)?

That's a bogus excuse to put those games under that heading and make them "controversial". Every video game can be "addictive", so if anything, an entirely different heading should be created that says something of the like:

"Games with nearly endless content can absorb players into the game, and this may lead to frequent use and may later develop into an obsession."

I think that statement more accurately desribes Online Role-playing games as a whole. The article should not expose World of Warcraft, Everquest, and Lineage.

Thanks.

[edit] 'Spanking' and 'Urination' in video games section

I have removed the entire section - the article is about controversial games. The removed section was merely a list of games that featured spanking or urination, which is not necessarily controversial. Proto:: 12:32, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

How is it NOT controversial?!--164.107.223.217 18:08, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
While I am not a fan of corporal punishment (particularly against children) I too feel this section isn't controversial. Movies, television, novels and even cartoons have been depicting the spanking of children for pretty much as long as they've existed, why is it suddenly controversial now? Bhamv 15:44, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Well, some goofs are actually trying to outlaw spanking in some areas of the world, so . . . --164.107.223.217 02:52, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Meet the Sims, urination et. al.

Just to clarify here:

  1. "Meet the Sims" has no place on the page as it's a meta game based around The Sims, so it's no more a real game than simply killing all the characters.
  2. The corresponding links support this notiong, e.g. "lady from sims pissed her pants", even ignoring the bad grammar it's [a] lady from [the] sims, not "Meet the Sims"
  3. The link to "Sexual Moments in Video Game History" is a joke, not a reference.

For these reasons I've protected the page to prevent the readdition of this material. Mallocks 11:21, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Said tag removed per WP:SEMI, you have no right to make such a change, go here if you wish to request it. 81.178.82.109 17:42, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
Duly noted. From that policy page evidently there's no argument for protection regardless; where should a content dispute be settled? Mallocks 17:56, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
In any case, the Sexual Moments in Video Game History may be a joke, but it does list actual sexual moments in video games and therefore is a convenient reference. The stuff on that page is real and anyone who has played those games can verify this. A reference is a reference and as long as its factual, we can't alway be happy about how it's presented. Is Meet the Sims available in stores, on eBay or anything? Plus, the title is simply controversial games. Can't games be controversial regardless of how official they are? Cheers, --164.107.223.217 21:26, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
As far as Sexual Moments in Video Game History goes, my only issue is that in the majority it is conveniently taken shots (particularly from the wrestling games) used to suggest sexual encounters rather than actual deliberate inclusions on the part of the game manufacturers. Nonetheless when faced with such items as the pixellated tiger penis I can't help but take your side on that page at least. My problem with Meet the Sims is that it's a meta game, that is that it is simply one of any number of things that you can do on the Sims, it isn't a modification or a purchasable product in any way. Mallocks 21:31, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
To this end I have readded the i-mockery site, simply noting the source. Mallocks 21:34, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] More controversy in Ocarina of Time: Sex Change?

Is it possible to add the controversial case of the character of Sheik in the present article? It has been debated whether Zelda did or did not change gender to become this character (she stayed that way for seven years). Some fans consider the gender change in this case to be inappropriate for an E rating.
