[edit] Spamming

User Mihirviveka has been spamming many genre-related pages with advertisments for the game Democracy Game, an article suggested for deletion. On this page he invented the genre "Political Strategy" solely for his(?) game. Wikipedia is not a place for advertisment or original research. Mikademus 09:49, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

User Yoshisaur12345 added direct links to the sales and promotion pages of external sites for six or so probably homemade games. Wikipedia is not an advertisment board. Recommend edits by user are kept under strict observation and user is reported or recommended for banning if repeted. Mikademus 20:36, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

This was the last of about 25 articles that I reverted spam links from this vandal. Apparently the vandal is well versed in Christian rock musicians. I'm disappointed that a "strong Christian" would go against their beliefs and do something like this. --Royalbroil 23:56, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Structure

This page was quite chaotic and though enumerating most possible and established genres and sub-genres did so without much structure. I have tried to refactor it inte genres and sub-genres. Though breaking the alphabetical order I moved third-person shooter to under first-person shooter due to the genres close relationship. I could not place either as a sub-genre to the other since both are well established and recognised denominations, not would , inventing an umbrella for them be anything but artificial. So proximal positioning seemed the best solution. Mikademus 08:33, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

I have a related question/thought. It seems odd that turn-based games is listed as a strategy sub-genre with just one game (Worms). It seems pretty obvious that Worms should be placed under turn-based strategy, and that the turn-based games heading should be deleted, with turn-based strategy and turn-based tactics being bumped up to sub-genre status (rather than their current sub-sub-genre status). I also wonder to a lesser degree about turn-based tactics as a sub-genre, when several of the listed games describe themselves as "turn-based strategy games". But for a counter argument, see the Tactical role-playing game article. There are already discussions elsewhere as to combining Turn-based strategy and Turn-based tactics into Turn-based strategy or Turn-based games, and I can see the merits of either combining them or not combining them. I'm still new here, so I don't feel qualified to making substantive changes yet, but I did want to share my views. ASpafford 23:41, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Redirected

i feel this list should be replaced by a category system. however, there are nice definitions of the sub-genres and also a the "people" section seem valuable for me. i hope someone can transform the content of this page into a better category system. --Horst_F_JENS 15:40, 2004 Jun 18 (UTC)

The definitions are from Computer and video game genres, the people section is now at List of computer and video game industry people, so I think this list can be deleted as soon as all games have their categories. --Conti| 18:09, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)
It looks to me that pretty much any game is in a category, so this goes to VfD now. --Conti| 18:18, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Is there a nice user-friendly interface to these particular categories? Are there links from all relevant articles (that linked to this page in the past) to all relevant categories? If the answer is negative, we can't delete this page yet. Paranoid 19:08, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I can change the links, so they would link to the categories. I also can put the nice definitions of each genre from Computer and video game genres to the category of that genre. Why do we have the category system when we keep lists like this anyways? --Conti| 19:23, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)
You cleverly blew away all the free links to articles that hadn't been written yet however. Lists are only equivalent to categories when every single list item has an article, which was not the case here. Stan 19:26, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC)
There will never be an article about every single game that exist, so you're right here. I still prefer the category-system, but it seems that the majority of the wikipedians that raised their voice here wants to keep the list, so I think it would be best to restore it. --Conti| 20:04, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I understand the reasons for deletion as well as the value of keeping the list. I think that a good solution would be to add some comments on the category pages first (so that they have not just the links, but a brief 1-paragraph description and a direct link to the article about the genre. And to solve the problem of links to unwritten articles we should write stubs or add the links to articles on sub-genre. Of course, it's a problem that there currently is no article on Perimeter, a new innovative RTS, but eventually someone will write about it anyway and if I thought it is so important, I could have at least add a comment about it in RTS or its talk page. Paranoid 21:27, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Article was listed on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion July 2 to July 10 2004, consensus was to redirect to Category:Computer and video game genres. Discussion may be found at Talk:List of computer and video games by category/Delete.

The redirect had only a fraction of the information, and according to the discussion redirecting wasn't a total consensus either. Considering the short length of the vote, and the issues with the category page - the page was brought back. Dcrt888 11:18, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC)

What still needs to be done before this page can be deleted? SharkD 03:47, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New Additions

So, I've added my FPS list. I've been compiling this for years, It's home is at http://firstpersonshooters.org/ I'd appreciate letting me know anything I may have missed. <Advocate>

... as well as keeping it updated as I update my list... <Advocate>

I got tired of seeing so many titles there with absolutely nothing about them. So I made links for the titles that didn't have a wiki entry. Not everything on my site has info yet, but most titles do and that's alot better than simply seeing the name of it. The only disadvantage for this that I can see is that you'd have to manually edit rather than simply clicking to add a wiki entry, but you would have had to do that before I turned everything into links anyway.

If there's a particular title that my site doesn't have anything about either, let me know and I'll go find and put something there. I want every single first person shooter ever created or considered to be represented.

<advocate> (http://firstpersonshooters.org/, eliteinc@comcast.net, FPS@landofthedragons.com)

I'm glad the list remains. This is a resource, not just of other resources within it. If all that is listed is things that there's further information on, many of the things which are lesser known may never make their way in, and may not do their duty as part of their genre to help spark interest in it.

I cleaned up the FPS list a bit, everything should now link either to it's Wiki article, where one exists, or to my site where if there isn't info about the title, I will add some as soon as it's brought to my attention.

<Advocate>

And I'm going to keep putting it back forever. Some rediculous soul out there thinks it's better to give people no information instead of some information just because it all happens to be from one place. If this were a politically oriented topic they might be correct, but since it's not, they are dead wrong.

Actually, no... Since I went to all that trouble to provide information for all those titles, and spent hours just getting this list straight, and since it's not appreciated, this list which is my blood & breath, will no longer be made available on wikipedia.

<Advocate>

[edit] Grand Theft Auto

Is it just me, or should the GTA series not be in the racing games category? The game has a lot more to it than just driving fast. I personally would consider it a FPS... at least that's what my husband calls it. Lachatdelarue (talk) 01:31, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

My bad, I just noticed that it's also in the TPS category. Nevermind. Lachatdelarue (talk) 01:46, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] A few things...

I noticed that there is no mention at all of the Zelda series! Where should these fit in? Also, there's a List of platform games, that's longer than the one on this page. Should this page have a short list that points to that one? Lachatdelarue (talk) 01:59, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

-- There is a section that anonymous user 71.112.9.11 added, "Hybrid strategy". This section was added by this user, along with it's single entry, "Strange Adventures in Infinite Space".

1. This smacks of bloat, adding new sections to an already hefty list for the sole purpose of adding one single game (and a game which I deeply suspect this user has an active interest in). We cannot go adding random bits of data to articles to fulfill our every whim and fancy, and especially not to simlpy toss in our own pet ideas/games/etc.

2. I have looked through this users list of contributions, and they are all focused on: the above game, the company that made this game, the people who work at the company who made this game, and other games this company has made. This user has added many contributions (perhaps even made outright) the wikipedia entry for this company, creating an article which is deeply non-NPOV and reads like a press release or sales brochure for the company.

I do not feel at all uncomfortable saying that I believe this person to be either with the company, or having some close relation to them (which in itself is of course not a bad thing). This, I believe, has translated into a clear case of pimping your own pet project, ignoring the question of whether the entry is truly worthy to be added in and of itself. A reader unfamiliar with the topics discussed in the article would be left thinking that this small, indie-developer game is in fact a major and accepted representation of a major and accepted genre. I feel it fails on both counts, and I'd like to see what you all think of deleting the entry mentioned above. Dxco 00:43, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Removed the same self-invented "genre" with the same title (along with its sequel) yet again today. Agree with all points of Dxco above. Request similar edits to be pruned on sight of added again. Mikademus 20:42, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Links?

I would just like to point out that many of the links, to articles that don't exist yet, in fact have related articles that exist. For example, until I found the article, Mutant League linked to the non-existent Mutant League instead of Mutant League Football, an article which (obviously) exists. There are likely many more like this. (Try the sports section)

I would be very pleased if someone would fix it.

Thank you.

            -T3h 1337 r0XX0r
  • I also would like the TCG section to be more expanded. There are many Card Based Games like Phantasy Star Episode III, as well as all the Yu-Gi-Oh games. Thanks to all you 1337z0rz for tolerating a n00b like me. Consider me p0wn3d.

[edit] Adding dates and plaforms

I think it would be usefull to mention the release date and platform for each game. If there are no objections I would start doing so in some days. --Shinjin 17:16, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] List of PC games?

I'm reposting my question that I posted elsewhere here after someone suggested that the question be asked here instead: Anyway, the link that I clicked onto from the PC gaming article to come here is a bit complex. Why not just have either an aphabetical or chronological list of PC games similar to the lists for console games, i.e. PlayStation, for example? Sincerely, --164.107.92.120 01:46, 14 November 2006 (UTC) --164.107.92.120 03:06, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion

This page should probably be deleted if it stays in its current form. It doesn't do anything that a category does not. To make this list better, it should provide some amount of annotation, and remove all the redlinked items. Tarinth 17:31, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

I've just put in a lot of the separate 'list of *genre*' articles as {main} links and intend to strip the associated sections here down to a few choice example games. You are right that some annotation can go in, as per Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and series boxes. Marasmusine 09:07, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
What still needs to be done before this page can be deleted? (I believe that deletion should be the end goal.) SharkD 03:49, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Nevermind. I guess it's useful.SharkD 04:40, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Rhythm games

Should the dance games simply be listed in the list of dance video games and taken out of the main section to save space. It seems kind of redundant having several of them listed on both pages. DarkTechnomancer 05:09, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Similar categories with different names

The categories Turn-based tactics and Tactical role-playing game are very similar. There's lots of overlap. What do we do about those? List them twice? SharkD 04:39, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Fixed. SharkD 02:54, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Strong POV removed from Art Games

Specifically from the following sentence: "The more recent installments of the The Legend of Zelda series, the Final Fantasy series and numerous other RPGs styled after it often aspire to be of intellectual or artistic value, but due to their grounding in traditional genre genres such substance can only exist momentarily in the gameplay itself, and is usually confined to the story and dialogue." It's not an encyclopedia's place to judge where artistic substance can or can not exist: particularly where this judgement is generalised to an entire class of games. I have edited to simply describe the aspiration to an artistic result, rather than imposing a POV on whether the result was achieved. However, the observation that the *attempt* to be 'artistic' is generally confined to the story and dialogue, is not so much an opinion but more a matter of fact so I have left that part in.--64.229.27.200 14:26, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
