Shira Elan Colla Brie (a.k.a. Lady Lumiya) is a fictional character in the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
She was a Force adept and Emperor's Hand who was trained in rudimentary Sith lore by Darth Vader. After Vader killed Emperor Palpatine and then died in the Battle of Endor, she inherited the title Dark Lady of the Sith, though whether this was through the guidance of the Sith spirits of Korriban, extensive studying of a Sith Holocron, or some other means is unknown. It is not known what Lumiya did when Palpatine's clones appeared. She became the true Dark Lady of the Sith when Palpatine's last clone was destroyed. Nearly all of her appearances were in the licensed comics published by Marvel Comics, beginning with issue #56.

Born on Coruscant, Brie was trained as an Imperial Intelligence agent, and was dispatched by Vader to infiltrate the Rebel Alliance. This she accomplished, and brilliantly, working her way all the way up to Rogue Squadron, where her vivacious beauty and intelligence attracted then-member Luke Skywalker. While serving with the Rebels, Brie would work alongside Kyle Katarn, Corwin Shelvay, and Erling Tredway on a mission to D'rinba IV to disable the superlaser of Death Star II.
Later, based on the planet Arbra, Rogue Squadron was detailed to covertly attack an Imperial fleet; during the battle, Skywalker's equipment malfunctioned, and he was unable to determine which of the TIE fighters were Imperial and which were Rebel, leaving him no choice but to rely on sensing intent through the Force. Using his remarkable connection to the Force, he detected and shot down his unseen enemy — who turned out to none other than his comrade Brie. While under a cloud during an investigation of how he shot down a fellow Rogue, Skywalker discovered that Brie's putative homeworld Shalyvane was in fact background cover for her, and that her true mission had been to discredit Luke with the resistance so that he would join Vader.
It was thought that she had perished in her fighter's crash, but Vader secretly had her damaged body nursed back to life and enhanced with cybernetic parts. Then he took her further under his tutelage, instructing her in the ways of the dark side in addition to her already fearsome skill set. She became, like Mara Jade, an Emperor's Hand, but while Brie was training on the fearsome Sith planet Ziost, both Vader and Palpatine perished in the Battle of Endor, leaving the title of "Dark Lady of the Sith" to her. It was there, seething with anger and bent on revenge, that Lumiya (as she now called herself) crafted her nearly-unique signature weapon: the "lightwhip", which had been previously invented only three times: by the New Sith Githany, a bounty hunter who died slightly before the Battle of Naboo, and Jedi Knight Kit Fisto, who used it in a plot to scare the people of a planet into assisting the Republic during the Clone Wars. It was a lightsaber crafted out of Kaiburr crystal and Mandalorian iron, but with the ability to flex and move like a leather whip. Unlike a regular lightsaber that creates a 'blade' from a highly focused arc of energy, the lightwhip works by sending a highly focused electrical current through metallic strands, creating a charge energy aura around the strands similar to a lightsaber blade.
On Herdessa, Lumiya attempted to kidnap Leia Organa Solo, allowing Skywalker to track her to the planet Kinooine. Initially, Lumiya triumphed over Skywalker and his companions Dani and Kiro. She revealed that the reason for her success was that Skywalker's Jedi training prepared him for energy weapons or solid weapons, but not both.
After being rescued by Kiro, Skywalker constructed a shorter lightsaber, with a synthetic red blade. He confronted Lumiya again and penetrated her cyborg armor, revealing the scarred Shira Brie.
Defeated, Lumiya fled in the wake of the Nagai invasion fleet.
She would later be heard of again when she lent military support (three Star Destroyers, two frigates and four corvettes) to the Tof invasion. She trained two apprentices: Flint, who was redeemed by Luke Skywalker, and the treacherous Sovereign Protector Carnor Jax, who was killed by Palpatine loyalist Kir Kanos. She is believed to have taken a new apprentice and disappeared into the mysterious "Cloak of the Sith" region of the galaxy, carrying on the secretive, clandestine tradition of the Sith first begun by Darth Bane.
In 40 ABY, Lumiya reemerged, revealing herself to Jacen Solo. According to her Vergere, Jacen's mentor in the New Jedi Order series, had been a Sith Apprentice. She also told him that she herself could never reach her potential as a Sith, due to her cybernetic implants. Haunted by visions of a galaxy consumed by war (precipitated by Lumiya's execution), Jacen appears to have taken the first steps towards becoming a Sith. Having doubts about Lumiya's sincerity Jacen asks her to meet him on Coruscant as a test of her loyalites (she claims that she no longer harbors any need for vengeance against Luke and Leia). Hiding her presence in the force Jacen brings her before Luke on several occasions and while Master Skywalker eventually does sense her he remained oblivious to the fact that he met her in person and that Jacen was receiving Sith teachings from her.
Lumiya was finally "tricked" by Jacen Solo into coming across Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade Skywalker (who were searching for their son, Ben Skywalker). Lumiya knew that Jacen had betrayed her, but she was proud of him -- it proved that he was strong enough to become a Sith. Fighting with her lightwhip and the aid of the Dark Twi'lek Jedi and former Killik Joiner Alema Rar, Lumiya was almost able to defeat Luke Skywalker while placing suspicions about Jacen in his mind. However, Luke managed to shoot Lumiya three times with his blaster before she could kill him. When Luke and Mara left, Lumiya was not yet dead. However, because of a baradium explosive charge strapped to her back that was set to explode should she die, Lumiya's death was never actually seen or verified. Luke and Mara escaped the explosion by just two minutes.
The news of Lumiya's death was relayed to Jacen through Alema Rar. However, Luke said that he would not believe Lumiya was dead until he saw her die.
Jacen was later able to contact Lumiya through the Force and confirmed that she had, indeed survived the battle with Luke and escaped before the explosion, though she was in pain and still recovering from blaster wounds which Luke had inflicted upon her. In answer to his apology, Lumiya told Jacen that she had gone expecting Luke to hurt her, and that she expected he would continue to do so until he killed her or he was brought around to their point of view. She also reiterated her earlier statements that Jacen needed a true Sith apprentice. Realizing that she was right, Jacen consented to allow Lumiya to prepare a trial for his cousin and informal Jedi apprentice, Ben Skywalker.
Unbeknownst to Jacen, Lumiya also undertook actions which allowed for the military forces of Commenor and Bothuwai to circumvent Gallactic Alliance vessels monitoring their fleet movements and travel to Corellia to assist in the breaking of the Gallactic Alliance's blockade; an action which resulted in the retreat of the Alliance from the Corellian system and a formation of a Corellian Confederacy consisting of Corellia, Bothuwai, Commenor, and several other planetary systems (the Hutts included). Her responsibility for these acts is, as of yet, unknown to Jacen Solo.
At a meeting on a space station over Gilater VIII which was purported to be the place where the Confederacy would elect it's military leader (a meeting which was in actuality a trap intended to ensare Alliance spies) Lumiya accompanied Jacen on his mission to observe and disrupt the proceedings. When it became clear that the meeting was a setup, several other characters appeared on the scene, including Luke and Mara, who had gone in their X wings to participate in a fleet action by the Alliance; Han and Leia, who had gone knowing that Alema Rar would be there looking for them; and Alema Rar, who had been told that the Solos would be attending. As Han and Leia fought Alema while Mara dealt with Confederacy security forces, Luke and Lumiya entered into a duel.
While fighting, Lumiya stated that she could understand Luke's hatred of her; to which Luke replied that he did not hate her, he only fought her because her hatred of him had led her to hurt him and his loved ones in the past. In order to show Luke that she did not hate him and that they were merely fighting for opposing ideals, Lumiya depowered her lightwhip and offered Luke her hand. Puzzled, but sensing that she genuinely held no malice for him, Luke deactivated his lightsaber and his shoto and grasped her hand. Before Luke could comment or inquire about her true motives since she obviously no longer sought to kill him or his loved ones, a ship which had been summoned remotely by Alema Rar crashed into the space station's dome, resulting in a depressurization which necessitated all present to evacuate the chamber immediately.
