[edit] Appropriate Picture
The picture of Luton sums up the place well. Looking at it I am reminded of the tears we would shed as children, playing in the streets, when on the wind would drift the heady aroma of the nearby glue factory. --Dumbo1 00:03, 17 May 2005 (UTC)
- I'd say it was made with a pinhole camera in a shoebox, or some other piece of free equipment. You would never take a real camera to Luton, because of the constant street robberies. [1] Goatherd 10:25, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
-
- Or maybe it was grabbed from this BBC webcam: http://www.bbc.co.uk/threecounties/content/webcams/stuart_street_webcam.shtml
Why the hell did Nv8200p pull the picture? It was better than nothing... Bjrobinson 11:56, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
- The picture was deleted because it violated copyright - it was taken from the BBC webcam. That's against Wikipedia policy and so it wasn't better than nothing. Pdean 12:52, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
I have added some pictures which have the correct licenses for Wikipedia GazMan7 12:36, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- Those pictures are great Gazman7! Bjrobinson 15:16, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
I have moved the picture of the town hall further up the article. I think we need a pic nearer the top or its just a block of text. What do others think?GazMan7 15:37, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
The picture still screws up the root contents menu for me, thats on three different computers. It might be because i use firefox? I would propose its moved to the 20th century section, as that bit is pretty devoid of pics? Bjrobinson 10:29, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- Running at 800x600 with Seamonkey, which is similar to Firefox, the article currently looks like this. This kind of problem crops up quite a lot with Wikipedia articles. IE has no problem. At 1024x768 there is no problem with Seamonkey. Nonetheless there is a large blank white area underneath the picture of Luton town hall, which looks poorI'm glad I don't have to fix this problem; I understand that the Wikipedia engine is not ideal for layout purposes. -Ashley Pomeroy 00:09, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
- I am generally unwilling to chop out pictures. But this shot of "Luton Town Centre" doesn't illustrate the subject, it can't be used to illustrate anything else, and it's not very pretty. It should really have been taken at noon, pointing down the main street, perhaps from the same location as this picture here. -Ashley Pomeroy 23:54, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
- It may not show the town in its best light, but is maybe a fair reflection on that side of the town. The other pics are very nice, i guess this evens it up a bit. Bjrobinson 15:27, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Electrolux
From the article: Vauxhall Motors opened a car plant in the town in 1905, along with an Electrolux household appliances plant, followed by other light engineering businesses
This, together with the surrounding sentances, gives the impression that an Electrolux plant was founded in the beginning of the 20th century. However, Electrolux wasn't, according to the wikipedia article, formed until 1910 and probably, as it isn't a british company, didn't open up a plant in Britain for some years. Could it have been another company, currently owned by Electrolux? Gunnar Larsson 21:13, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Crap Towns
Having been born and bred there i have an affinity to the place, but i think the main reason ppl will come the page is because of its 'crap towns' status. Anyway, could we move the bit about crap towns to above the History just below the intro? I'm not taking the piss, it seems one of the most interesting things about the article, and makes the town unique... not many places can claim such an 'honour'. Bjrobinson 22:50, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
- This seems to have been completely deleted. For better or worse, I think a comment to the effect that it won Crap Towns II should probably get a mention on the page. As so often gets pointed out, Wikipedia is a source of information, not a promotional tool, for business or towns. Legis 09:32, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- I have reverted the delete of the triva section with the Crap Towns item. If people want to edit it then ok, but i agree it probably should be mentioned. GazMan7 11:27, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Shameless Advertising
Unless anyone can come up with a good reason for keeping it in, I suggest the following sentance should be deleted:
"In 2006, a local independent travel agency called Double S Travel Worldchoice became the first Luton agency to be voted a finalist in five categories of the 2006 Travel Agent Achievement Awards 2006."
Wikipedia is not advertising space for small companies. Indisciplined 23:13, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Peer Review
I have nominated Luton for Peer review. The article has come on a long way recently, and is a lot better structured than it was, however some additonal input from people outside of Luton/Beds etc may well help improve it further.GazMan7 11:06, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re-write
Having read though the article today there are many disjointed facts stated. In places particularly the opening paragraphs this does not really flow terribly well. The intro probably should be cut with much of the info dropping down the article. GazMan7 16:33, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
I have started to re-organise the article, any ideas/suggestions/help gratefully appreciated.GazMan7 10:52, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Automated Review
The following suggestions were generated by a semi-automatic javascript program, and might not be applicable for the article in question.
- Please expand the lead to conform with guidelines at Wikipedia:Lead. The article should have an appropriate number of paragraphs as is shown on WP:LEAD, and should adequately summarize the article.[?]
- Consider removing links that add little to the article or that have been repeated in close proximity to other links to the same article, as per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (links) and WP:CONTEXT.[?]
- Per Wikipedia:Context and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates), months and days of the week generally should not be linked. Years, decades, and centuries can be linked if they provide context for the article.[?]
- Avoid including galleries in articles, as per Wikipedia:Galleries. Common solutions to this problem include moving the gallery to a separate page, like Gallery of Luton.[?]
- There may be an applicable infobox for this article. For example, see Template:Infobox Biography, Template:Infobox School, or Template:Infobox City.[?] (Note that there might not be an applicable infobox; remember that these suggestions are not generated manually)
- Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (numbers), there should be a non-breaking space -
between a number and the unit of measurement. For example, instead of 30 miles, use 30 miles, which when you are editing the page, should look like: 30 miles.[?] - Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (numbers), when doing conversions, please use standard abbreviations: for example, miles -> mi, kilometers squared -> km2, and pounds -> lb.[?]
- Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (numbers), please spell out source units of measurements in text; for example, the Moon is 380,000 kilometres (240,000 mi) from Earth.[?] Specifically, an example is 51 km.
- Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (headings), headings generally do not start with articles ('the', 'a(n)'). For example, if there was a section called ==The Biography==, it should be changed to ==Biography==.[?]
- Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (headings), headings generally should not repeat the title of the article. For example, if the article was Ferdinand Magellan, instead of using the heading ==Magellan's journey==, use ==Journey==.[?]
- Generally, trivia sections are looked down upon; please either remove the trivia section or incorporate any important facts into the rest of the article.[?]
- Please reorder/rename the last few sections to follow guidelines at Wikipedia:Guide to layout.[?]
- Per WP:WIAFA, this article's table of contents (ToC) may be too long- consider shrinking it down by merging short sections or using a proper system of daughter pages as per Wikipedia:Summary style.[?]
- There are a few occurrences of weasel words in this article- please observe WP:AWT. Certain phrases should specify exactly who supports, considers, believes, etc., such a view.
- As done in WP:FOOTNOTE, footnotes usually are located right after a punctuation mark (as recommended by the CMS, but not mandatory), such that there is no space in between. For example, the sun is larger than the moon [2]. is usually written as the sun is larger than the moon.[2][?]
- Please provide citations for all of the
{{fact}}
s.[?] - Please ensure that the article has gone through a thorough copyediting so that it exemplifies some of Wikipedia's best work. See also User:Tony1/How to satisfy Criterion 1a.[?]

[edit] St. Patrick's day
This appeared on the main article today and I can understand why. Luton has a huge Irish community and this is part of luton life, the celebration of St. patrick's day. However, I think we need to discuss this before we make it permanent. I cannot source it but someone who could would be helpful.
The paragraphs reads:
St. Patricks Day
Luton is a huge base for Irish immigrants and those of irish descent. It's because of this that each year a week long festival is held to celebrate the Patron saint of Ireland [[St Patrick]]. This is one of the largest St. Patricks day celebrations in the country and is arranged by the Luton Irish Forum. Each year entertainers and band from all over the U.K come and perform in Market hill, Luton where the celebration is held.
Anyone who would like to comment about the relevence and 'notability' (although I don't like that word), please leave your message below. Personally, I can't see anything wrong except there doesn't seem to be a right place to put it. Again, any suggestions, make them below.
Thanks, Random articles 20:52, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
- Without references etc i see it as limited importance. Is it really a huge festival, ive lived in Luton for years and had no idea anything on a large scale was organised. For me its not that 'notable'GazMan7 15:05, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
- I would also agree the importance of Paddy's day to Luton in general may not be sufficient to afford inclusion in this article. --Mattdove 03:02, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- I've been looking around, sorting out `what links here` on the Luton page, and I've found this interesting page, Irish community in Britain, where it says that luton has an Irish community of 4.65% total population. Apparently the largest (ratio) in the UK (barring NI).
-
- Now I know it says it needs to cite it's references, but it more or less coincides with what we know already. Luton has a huge Irish based community. Now whether we include this is up to the rest of you, but this could do with a mention, I reckon. Random articles 17:44, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
The overall concensus was to leave this paragraph out. However, a demographics section has been added instead. Thankyou Random articles 16:09, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

- I made this topic and can see the point of those above. Luton Irish Forum The luton irish forum organises this and the above is the link to their website.
