Maccabi Tel Aviv is the most decorated club in Israeli football history with 18 championships, 22 national cups, 2 Asian Champions Cups and 2 Toto cups. Six times Maccabi won the championship and the cup in the same season ("double"). Maccabi Tel Aviv is the only team in Israel which never played in the second league. Maccabi has always played in the Premier League.
Maccabi Tel Aviv participated in the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League, as the second Israeli club to qualify to this competition, after Maccabi Haifa did it in 2002/03 season, however they had the honour of hosting the first ever UEFA Champions League game to be played in Israel. Maccabi Haifa had to play their UEFA Champions League games in Cyprus, due to securtiy reasons. Their 'home' matches were played at Ramat-Gan Stadium as Maccabi Tel Aviv's home Bloomfield Stadium did not meet UEFA stadium requirements. Maccabi Tel Aviv was eliminated after the group stage, with 4 points and decent scores against Bayern Munich, Juventus and Ajax Amsterdam.
The 2005/06 season was celebrated the club's centennial year. Maccabi purchased many stars, such as the team's leading goal scorer Avi Nimni, Eyal Berkovic, Giovanni Rosso, José Duarte, Blessing Kaku, Avi Yehiel, Eugen Trică, Erez Eliav (who left the club in November 2005) and more, as well as Zion Cohen who resigned from football after a couple of weeks because of a medical problem. Maccabi received the nickname "Galácticos" by the media, seeing resemblance to the strategy of signing star players known by Real Madrid. The club broke the national record for season ticket sales (previous record was 5,500, also set by Maccabi) with more than 9,000 subscribers, about two months before the first game of the season, and about 11,000 right before the first match. However, the season ended as a failure, with only the 6th place, 31 points behind champions Maccabi Haifa.
On December 5, 2005, the coach Nir Klinger has resigned after several months that the fans have been asking him to do so. The Dutch coach, Ton Kaanen, who was recently fired from Beitar Jerusalem FC, signed until the end of the season. Current coach Eli Cohen, known as "the Sheriff" replaced Caanen in May 2006.

Only up to five non-Israeli nationals can be on an Israeli club. Those with Jewish ancestry, married to an Israeli or have played in Israel for an extended period of time can claim a passport or permanent residency, which would allow them to play with Israeli status. e.g Giovanni Rosso can claim Israeli status since he has played in Israel for over 10 years. Although, he does not have Israeli citizenship, Tvrtko Kale is eligible because his grandmother was Jewish.
