Meaning of the Flag There is a story that tells why the flag is designed like it is. It goes as following: During a battle against the Russians, many soldiers were ordered to run and attack an incoming Russian front. This is a very daunting task and only one soldier charged at first, when his comrades saw him charge it gave them courage. After they had beaten the Russians, the young man who charged first was taken to the field hospital and was laid on a white sheet and the sheet was folded over him. He died soon after, but when they took him off the sheet they noticed that he did not bleed at all on the part of the sheet touching his back. This is because he never turned around to retreat while he was attacking, and this showed great bravery. This is why the Flag of Latvia is red, white, and red.
