Macleans College is a secondary school in Auckland, New Zealand.

Macleans College is situated on prime real estate in Bucklands Beach, Auckland. It has some of the best views of the Hauraki Gulf available in Auckland, and on some occasions experiences particularly heavy fog.

It was opened in 1980 by then Governor General Sir David Beattie. The first principal was Colin Prentice, followed by his executive Mr Macdonald. The current principal is Byron Bentley.

[edit] Whanau System

Macleans was the first public school in New Zealand to use the Whanau House System - dividing the school up into 'houses' of about 300 students each, with two classes of 30 or so students for each year level. The eight whanau houses are named after famous New Zealanders: Batten, Mansfield, Rutherford, Hillary, Kupe, Te Kanawa, Upham and Snell. The oldest house is Hillary, although it was rebuilt after it burnt down. More houses have been added as the roll has increased, with the latest addition being Upham, which was opened in 2003.

Macleans College offers many opportunities to fee paying foreign students. As they pay more than NZ$13,000 each per year, they constitute a significant part of the school's income.

[edit] Curriculum

Macleans College offers a vast range of subjects. Mathematics is compulsory to the end of Year 11, and English and Physical Education are compulsory to the end of Year 12, although Physical Education will be dropped if a student plans on taking five subjects in Year 12. In Year 9 students are able to select six option classes, three for each half-year. For languages, they can choose full-year French or Japanese, or two half-year courses choosing from French, German, Spanish or Japanese. By the time students reach Year 13 every class they take is an option.

The Macleans College is renowned for its attention to soccer and basketball. The Premier Basketball boys is currently coached by Andrew Linton, who has been coaching for 4 years and still continuing. The First Eleven Soccer boys have won the Auckland's secondary school league in 2005, which was an achievement that has not been savoured for 13 years.The First Eleven Boys Soccer team is now competing in the Auckland Premier Division, the highest ranked college football league in the country.

Macleans College offers students two pathways - NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement), and CIE (Cambridge International Examinations). Like some other schools, CIE was first offered in response to controversy related to NCEA.
