Mai is a new transfer student to Fuuka Academy. She has been taking care of her younger brother Takumi since the death of their parents, taking jobs to earn money for his operation and facing responsibilities well beyond those of her age. She hates to burden others with her problems.
She becomes friendly with other students in her class, including the comedy pair Chie Harada and Aoi Senou. She likes Yuuichi Tate but is awkward around him and often ends up arguing with him, and is also at odds with his childhood friend Shiho Munakata. She takes Mikoto Minagi in as her roommate and takes care of her.
Mai is repeatedly noted as having a large bust, being a top contender for the Fuuka Academy's "Biggest Breast Rankings." This becomes a running gag throughout the anime as well as the other series.
Mai holds extreme guilt for her role in the accident that caused the death of her mother and Takumi's health problems. Mai was watching Takumi and left him to go play with a friend. Takumi fell into a river, and their mother jumped in to save him and died in the hospital some time later. The fate of Mai's father is not revealed. She is reluctant to get close to others due to her responsibilities as her brother's caretaker and as a HiME.
When the Searrs Foundation attempts to take control of Fuuka Academy, Mai joins with the others and helps to free the students. In a showdown with Alyssa Searrs, Mai uses herself and Kagutsuchi to block an attack from Alyssa's Child, Artemis. Kagutsuchi transforms into a jet mode which allows Mai and her Child to reach Artemis in space and defeat it.
During the HiME carnival, Mai agrees with Midori Sugiura and attempts to prevent the HiMEs from fighting each other. However, she is unable to stop the others and experiences extreme psychological stress from the death of Takumi. She attacks Mikoto, believing her to be the one responsible for Takumi's death, and the two become reluctant enemies. Later Yuuichi also dies due to Mikoto's defeat of Shiho. Mai becomes traumatized and initially refuses to fight anymore, not wanting to see anyone else disappear. Talking with fellow remaining HiME Natsuki Kuga, she resolves to end the HiME carnival and sets off to find Mikoto and the Obsidian Lord.
After 11 of the HiMEs have been defeated, Mai is granted entrance to the Obsidian Lord's lair. She encounters the Obsidian Lord in Reito's body and Mikoto under his control. She fights the two but is unable to defeat either of them until a newly revived Yuuichi arrives and fights Reito.
Mai realizes her feelings for Mikoto and expresses it to her, which breaks the Obsidian Lord's control over Mikoto. Mikoto then defeats her brother, which causes the true form of the Obsidian Lord to appear. Mai attempts to attack with Kagutsuchi, but the Obsidian Lord controls the Child through the sword in its head. After the other HiMEs destroy the HiME Star, Kagutsuchi is able to destroy the Obsidian Lord.
In the epilogue, Mai and Yuuichi attempt to kiss but are pulled apart by the appearance of everyone else. She also takes the others to a karoake box, singing to her heart's content.
[edit] Element and Child
Mai's HiME abilities first manifested as a barrier against Duran's attack on the ferry. However, it was not until Episode 3 that she was able to materialize her Element, four gold rings with emerald magatama on them. Floating around her wrists and ankles, they give her the ability to fly and manipulate fire in addition to the above-mentioned barrier.
Her Child is Kagutsuchi, named after Kagu-tsuchi, the Japanese god of fire. It is a large dragonlike creature with flaming wings. It has a large sword impaling his head, placed there by the Obsidian Lord 300 years ago as a partial seal on his power. It can generate large amounts of flame and project them in a devastating attack. Kagutsuchi is released by Mai soon after manifesting her Element, although Kagutsuchi had previously saved Mai and Mikoto from drowning.
Against Alyssa and Artemis, Kagutsuchi reveals a jet mode which enables it to travel at high speeds.
Mai's HiME mark is located on her right breast, an area of the body said to be controlled by Cancer, her Zodiac sign.
[edit] Manga
Mai is still a hardworking person who fusses over Takumi and is reluctant to tell others of her troubles. She is a current student at Fuuka Academy and part of the Anti-Orphan Squad. She and Natsuki are fierce rivals, each one despising the other's attitude.
In the initial battle between Mai and Natsuki, Mai learns that Yuuichi is her (and Natsuki's) Key and summons Kagutsuchi just in time to deflect a deadly attack from Natsuki's Duran. Mai, Tate and Natsuki quickly form a love triangle. Although Mai initially pushes Yuuichi away, stating that he shouldn't worry about something that doesn't involve him, they work together to defeat an Orphan and become closer as a result.
For Yuuichi's birthday, Mai stays up late to knit a shinai sheath for him and falls sick as a result of overworking herself. Shortly thereafter, Mai and Yuuichi kiss while she is recovering in the infirmary, a fact which many others seemingly know about. This later impacts the bond between Yuuichi and Natsuki, preventing the summoning of Duran.
Mai is pleased when Yuuichi rejects the offer of the Ori-HiME Team and stays with her and the Anti-Orphan Squad. They defeat Yuuki Nao, who was sent to "convince" Yuuichi to join the Ori-HiME. Together with Natsuki, they defeat the Ori-HiME duo Haruka Suzushiro and Yukino Kikukawa, causing the Ori-HiME Team to merge into the Anti-Orphan Squad.
After Shiho arrives at the school as part of the Searrs Female Institute exchange party, she tries to get Yuuichi to move out of Mai's room and into hers. After Shiho reveals to Mai that the Key dies if the Child is defeated, Mai pushes Yuuichi away from herself so as not to risk getting him killed. She almost becomes a PRINCESS so she can continue fighting without risking Tate's life.
Mai teams up with Yuuichi and the Anti-Orphan Squad to prevent Searrs from opening the gate to the HiME Star and annihilating the school. She and Yuuichi defeat Mikoto and Shiho and make it to the gate just before Saega Kuga opens it and reveals two of the three QUEENs.
While the Anti-Orphan Squad decides what to do, Mai finds out that Takumi has died from his illness. Mai falls into depression and once again pushes Yuuichi away from her. Mai stays at the hospital and is witness to the reawakening of Takumi as the Obsidian Lord. Mai joins her brother's side and becomes the last of the QUEENs.
Inside the Obsidian Palace, Natsuki and Yuuichi face off against a more powerful Mai and after fighting manage to win her back over to their side. Takumi attempts to annihilate them with a powerful attack, but they are saved by Mashiro.
Yuuichi, Natsuki and Mai face off against Takumi. All attacks prove useless until Tate punches Takumi and gets him to realize that he only wanted to make his sister happy. However, the HiME Star absorbs all of the other HiMEs and Takumi to give birth to a Child. The three defeat the Child by using the Sword of Kagutsuchi.
After the HiME Star has been defeated, all life at the academy returns to normal. However, Natsuki and Shiho are still fighting with Mai for Tate.
[edit] Powers
Mai starts with her trademark rings and is already fairly skilled at fighting. Her Key is Yuuichi Tate, and her Child is Kagutsuchi.
As a QUEEN, Mai becomes more powerful and is able to summon a darker Kagutsuchi without the use of a Key. She later reverts to being a normal HiME.
In the final battle, Kagutsuchi draws itself into the sword stuck in its head, creating the Sword of Kagutsuchi which she, Yuuichi and Natsuki wield.
[edit] My-Otome
[edit] Anime
Mai Tohika is a national of Zipang and the elder sister of Prince Takumi, which makes her Princess Mai. She and Natsuki Kruger were classmates and roommates at Garderobe, and Mai was also the Oneesama to Sara Gallagher. After gaining her Meister GEM, though, she went missing, becoming known as the "Tragic Otome." According to the legend, she was torn between her duty as an Otome and her love for a man. A few years ago she disappeared in the Sprite's Forest and has not been seen since. This tale intrigues Arika Yumemiya as she attempts to understand her feelings for Sergay Wáng.
Although she appears as a silhouette in the first OP (Dream Wing) and in full color in the second OP (Crystal Energy), it is not until episode 23 that she finally shows her face onscreen when Arika, Mashiro, and Miyu arrive in the Black Valley. Mai lives there and serves as the Otome to Mikoto the Cat Goddess. As opposed to her My-HiME incarnation, she is a much more relaxed and carefree person (to Natsuki's consternation) but still has good cooking talent.
While Arika trains with Mikoto, Mai teaches Mashiro to become a better queen, due to the former's position as royalty and Otome. Mai and Mikoto escort Arika and Mashiro back to Windbloom, and Mai does battle against Nagi's forces. In the end, she is reunited with her brother and remains with Mikoto to tend to the new prison labor camp at the "Black Garderobe."
The 8th My-Otome DVD omake reveals that Mai actually had been asked by her "lover," a man who resembles Yuuichi and whose family sponsored her in Garderobe, to be his Otome. Mai had difficulty in deciding whether to be his Otome, one of the Five Pillars, or her brother's Otome, so she took a long walk, got lost, and was captured by Mikoto. Mai is unable to escape from the cat goddess.
[edit] My-Otome Zwei
Mai has set up a ramen shop in the Black Valley, which Mashiro visits for food and advice. After a huge SLAVE appears, Mai and Arika do battle against it, combining their attacks to defeat it. However, before the two can celebrate, the shadow knocks Mai into the roof of a building and the Black Valley vanishes. The next episode reveals that Mai and Mashiro have been missing since the incident.
[edit] GEM
Mai's Element are rings are similar to their My-HiME incarnations. She can also project a huge ring from her belt which she uses to accelerate and perform a fiery aerial attack. In My-Otome Zwei, she allows Arika to dash through the large ring to form a potable combo attack. On a funnier note, she also cooks by using her rings as portable stoves.
Mai's GEM is the Fire Stirring Ruby (炎綬の紅玉 Enju no Kōgyoku), which she received upon graduation. Mikoto the Cat Goddess swallowed the GEM's ring, creating an unofficial contract between them. During her materialization sequence, Mai's GEM displays "Unknown" as her contract.
[edit] Manga
Mai is the first of the HiME to be revived by Fumi. Arika and Nina are unable to attack her at first due to her barrier powers. Sergay calls her the strongest HiME from the legend of "Seven Days of Flame" who burnt the world to the ground, citing her as an example of the superiority of the original HiMEs over the modern 乙––-type HiMEs.
This Mai has a bitter, nihilistic attitude. She becomes infuriated when Manshiro's attitude reminds her of Yuuichi, who she states has manipulated her feelings. She was defeated by Manshiro and the Sword of Akatsuki, released from her false memories, and reunited with the spirits of Yuuichi and Mikoto.
The photograph held by the real Mashiro reveals that her mother, the Empress of Windbloom, strongly resembles Mai. However, no information about her is given.
[edit] Powers
The resurrected Mai shares the same powers as her My-HiME counterpart, but she is much more powerful, able to block the attacks from Arika and Nina in their Meister Robes and knock them around with her fire attacks with ease.
