My-HiME (舞-HiME Mai-HiME?) is an anime series created by Sunrise, Inc., which originally premiered on TV Tokyo from September 2004 to March 2005. The show is about HiMEs, 12 girls able to materialize magical weapons known as Elements and summon powerful beings called Children.
The tone has many shōnen elements, with some parody of anime clichés, from magical-girls to romance, fan service and typical Japanese school life. However, serious matters are afoot behind the comedy, and the show takes a darker turn in later episodes.
The series is licensed for North American distribution by Bandai Entertainment and European distribution by Bandai's European subsidiary, Beez, with the first American DVD released at the end of March 2006.

[edit] Plot
Mai Tokiha is an average high school girl and devoted older sister who earns a scholarship to the prestigious Fuuka Academy. On her arrival she learns that she is a HiME - one of 12 girls with magical powers. With all of the HiMEs gathered at Fuuka Academy by the mysterious chairman of the school, each girl must deal with their powers along with their relationships.
[edit] Nomenclature
- HiMEs, also known as Valkyries and Ikusahimes, refers to females with the ability to materialize solid objects from photons. It is an acronym for "Highly-Advanced Materializing Equipment" and is used to refer to both the females with the HiME ability as well as the ability itself. It is also a backronym of hime, the Japanese word for princess. HiME all have an identical partially-encircled dot birthmark on various points of their bodies.
- Elements are weapons created by focusing a HiME's ability to create solid matter from photons. A HiME is able to materialize or dematerialize them at will.
- Childs are powerful robotic-like creatures who choose to act as guardians for the HiMEs. In exchange for accepting the protection of a Child, a HiME must put her most important person as collateral. If the Child perishes in battle, the most important person also vanishes and the HiME loses her powers. As the feelings the HiME has for her most important person increases, the stronger and larger the Child becomes.
- Orphans are monsters that the HiME fight early in the series. Orphans are the same as Childs, but with a distinct difference - they lack the capability to resonate with the soul of a HiME, and instead are attracted to the emotions at Fuuka Academy. Whereas a Child appears as a robotic form of an animal, an Orphan resembles a more organic and warped version of an animal.
