Nelonen or (Fyran in Swedish) is a Finnish commercial TV channel. It serves most of Finland, bar Lapland (except on digital). Despite its English name, "Channel Four," it is not owned by Channel 4 (UK), although it can be considered the Finnish equivalent in its focus on light and reality tv programming.
[edit] Criticism
Nelonen was launched quickly and in an unprepared state. It has been criticised for importing "trash shows", instead of quality. Its documentaries, in particular, have been the subject of criticism. Entertainment value and the focus on highly emotive issues have earned the label of "the tabloids in documentary".
The role of Nelonen in the larger context of Aatos Erkko's corporation is interesting. The sole competitor of Nelonen in commercial television is MTV3. This channel threatens the position of Erkko's other media such as the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat in the competition for advertising revenue. As a result, Nelonen can be seen as a device to reduce the profits of MTV3 rather than introduce new television to Finland. Particularly in the beginning, Nelonen's haphazardly created concept added to this impression.
