Newtonhill

Newtonhill is a medium population village of 4,000 in Aberdeenshire, nestled between Northern Portlethen, Southern Muchalls and the larger Stonehaven (pop 15,000). Until recently the village, originally called Skateraw, had two commercial outlets (a convenience store and a bakery) however the recent closure of the local bakery has left the convenience store as the sole retail point for the area. There also two pubs in the village, Quoiters and The Newton Arms. Local events centre around the Community Centre which is close to the local library. Historically a train station was present in the older quarters of Newtonhill but this has now become defunct, operating as a signalling station only. Skateraw became most noticed historically for its fishing industry, the old smoke house is still visible in the lower village, though this is also not in operation. Newtonhill today is accessed by the A90 and functions primarily as a commuter town to Aberdeen and other business hubs in the Aberdeenshire area.

Newtonhill is situated about three kilometers east of the ancient Causey Mounth road, which was built on high ground to make passable this only available medieval route from coastal points south to Aberdeen. This ancient passage specifically connected the Bridge of Dee via Portlethen Moss, Muchalls Castle and Stonehaven to the south^[1]. The route was that taken by William Keith, 7th Earl Marischal and the Marquis of Montrose when they led a Covenanter army of 9000 men in the first battle of the Civil War in 1639^[2].
