Rattray, Aberdeenshire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rattray is an area near to Crimond, Scotland. There is a village with the same name that was largely destroyed and never recovered after a storm in the 18th century that covered it in sand from the nearby dunes at Rattray Head.
The site had been settled since as far back as 4000BC[1] due to the natural harbour which was cut off from the sea when the Loch of Strathbeg was created.
On the site of Rattray village, there is a ruined church, St Mary's Chapel where the grave yard can also be visited. [2]
Rattray Head is the beach area which has fine golden sands and large sand dunes of up to 30 metres. There is a lighthouse, Rattray Head Lighthouse, that is accessible via. a causeway which is underwater most of the time and only visible at low tide. It is wide enough for a vehicle to cross.
There is a hotel on the edge of the dunes [3]
