[edit] Playing career
[edit] Queens Park Rangers
Quashie began his career in London with Queens Park Rangers, making his League debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford in December 1995, impressing despite his club's 2-1 defeat. He was used sparingly for the remainder of that campaign & QPR were relegated from the premier league in 95-96 season. He broke into the first eleven on a regular basis in the 1997-98 season.
After several impressive performances for QPR Quashie was awarded with England Under-21 and 'B' honours.
[edit] Nottingham Forest
Quashie joined then FA Premiership side Nottingham Forest for a fee of £2.5million at the start of the 1998-99 season, but struggled as they were comfortably relegated.
Despite settling into the team, and providing some good performances, Nottingham Forest missed out on promotion the following season.
[edit] Portsmouth
For the next season, 2000-01, Portsmouth paid a cut-price £600,000 to take him to Fratton Park and he soon became a regular but infuriatingly inconsistent player. He was a part of the 2002-03 season, during which Portsmouth won the First Division championship. During the season Quashie was the club's vice-captain.
Despite missing three months of the 2003-04 Premiership season, Quashie remained a first choice player as Portsmouth claimed 13th place. Despite being a former England U21 player, he was also eligible for Scotland. When Scotland manager Berti Vogts gave him the opportunity to play international football, Quashie switched his allegience to the Scots and made his debut against Estonia. He scored a goal in his second game - a 4-1 win over Trinidad and Tobago, which cemented his place as a first team regular for his adoptive country.
Unfortunately, his penchant for smashing the ball into Row Z every time he had a shot at goal has meant that his name is forever immortalized with the Pompey faithful - every time an opposing player has a shot and misses the goal, the Pompey fans chant "Quashie! Quashie!".
[edit] Southampton
On January 17, 2005, following a row between Quashie and Portsmouth regarding wages, Quashie rejoined former Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp at Southampton for a fee of £2.1 million. After the transfer of Jason Dodd, he became the club's captain, but he was unable to prevent the Saints being relegated at the end of the 2004-05 season.
[edit] West Bromwich Albion
He joined West Bromwich Albion on 31 January 2006 for £1.2 million on a three-and-a-half-year contract and at the end of the season achieved the rare distinction of being relegated in two successive seasons, the fourth time in all.
[edit] West Ham United
On January 8, 2007, he became Alan Curbishley's second signing of the transfer window when joined West Ham United on a three and a half year deal from West Brom for a fee of £1.5 million rising to £1.7 million depending on appearances.
On January 13 2007 he made his Premier League debut with the Hammers against Fulham F.C. [1]
[edit] Trivia
Quashie is currently the most relegated player in the history of the English Premier League. He has been relegated a total of four times- Queens Park Rangers 1995-96; Nottingham Forest 1998-99; Southampton 2004-05 and West Bromwich Albion 2005-06. His current side West Ham are in danger of being relegated this season, and if they are, it will be Quashie's fifth relegation campaign - thus giving him his nickname of Nigel 'The Relegator' Quashie
Notwithstanding that, Quashie was a member of the Portsmouth side that gained promotion to the Premier League in 2003, but survived in 2004-05 after he left for Southampton.
