North Dakota State Capitol

The North Dakota Capitol is the seat of government of the U.S. state of North Dakota. The Capitol is located in Bismarck, North Dakota at 600 East Boulevard Avenue, on a 160 acre campus.

The main building is a 241.67 feet (73.7 m) tall, 19-story Art Deco skyscraper. It is the tallest building in North Dakota.^[1] At its base, in the west wing, the two chambers of the North Dakota Legislative Assembly meet when in session. The North Dakota Supreme Court meets in the east wing. The tower itself is home to the office of the Governor of North Dakota, and the offices of state agencies.

Also located on the campus is the North Dakota State Library, the North Dakota Governor's Residence, the North Dakota Heritage Center, the State Office Building, and the Liberty Memorial Building, built 1920-1924; the oldest building on the capitol grounds still standing, it is used as office space.

The original state capitol burned to the ground in December 1930, requiring the construction of a new building in the middle of the Great Depression. The tower and wing were built by the Works Progress Administration between 1931 and 1934, at a cost of USD$2 million. The state sold half of the original capitol campus to defray the cost of construction.
