[edit] Ogg Theora

Hello Now3d, I saw your comment on the Saddam Hussein talk page. Did you make the Ogg Theora version yourself? I was looking into how to trasncode from other video codecs into Ogg Theora a couple of months ago, but it seemed very difficult, no straightforward way to do it. Are there new applications now? I have done quite a bit of encoding on my Windows system, using avisynth and Virtualdub, so that's what I'm familiar with. I also have a linux system, but I've never done any encoding on it. - pir 12:12, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Ogg Theora Response

Hi Pir,

Yes, I created the Ogg Theora version myself. It was not the simplest process, because there is no application with integrated encoding support. As the origional file was WMV, first I had to decode that, and correct the frame rate. Then I could convert to a YUV stream, then from that I could convert to Ogg Theora.

I am using:

ibogg-1.1 libtheora-1.0alpha3 MPlayer september CVS

These are the commands I used:

$ mencoder shakinghands_high.wmv -ofps 30 -nosound -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mjpeg -o donnald_mjpep.avi

$ mplayer -ao null -nosound -vo yuv4mpeg donnald_mjpep.avi

$ encoder_example -v 2 stream.yuv > 1983_Donald_Rumsfeld_meeting_Saddam_Hussein.ogg

Hope this helps, Cheers Now3d 13:41, 8 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Renaming North Korea

Hi Now3d, Please stop changing "North Korea" to "DPR Korea" without discussion. The current naming conventions are the result of a consensus among many editors. If you believe there's a better way to do things, the right approach is to start a discussion on Talk:North_Korea with your proposed changes. If you build a consensus around your proposals, they can be implemented in a consistent way across all North Korea articles. If you just unilaterally change things against consensus, your edits will probably be reverted. See Wikipedia:Naming_conventions (common names) for some more information. Also, please don't impose British spelling and punctuation on articles without a good reason. See WP:MOS#National_varieties_of_English. --Reuben 18:10, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Correcting the DPR Korea abreviated country name from North Korea

Hi Rueben, I'll post if I get time on Talk:North_Korea. However, there isn't a reason to call a country by a different name than it is called. They call them selves the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in full, or DPR Korea for short. We shouldn't perpetuate a different name for their country. (I hope you are watching my talk page, as I was unsure if I should respond on your talk page). Cheers, now3d

Thanks for working through the talk page. --Reuben 15:38, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Hi now3d, saw your discussion on the 'North Korea' entry. I agree that the country ought to be referred to as the DPRK rather than North Korea, although DPR Korea sounds a little weird, as most people refer to China as the PRC, rather than PR China, although I can definitely see your point. Nevertheless, we have had a naming discussion before and it seems many Wiki users prefer to preserve the name 'North Korea', although the US officials now (in press conferences, etc.) refer to the country as the DPRK. Please understand Now3d that firstly, this is an encyclopedia which is written by collaboratively according to many policies and guidelines, among them writing witth a neutral point of view. As an encyclopedia, specifically an English-language one, there are guidelines on using the most common name for a country as both an article title, and on second and subsequent reference. Yes, "the Democratic People's Republic of Korea" is the country's official name, and yes, the abbreviation of that is DPRK. All of that information is present in the article. But "North Korea" is the term most widely used in English-speaking countries; moreover, it is the term that the average reader of Wikipedia would use to search for the article. We need to be mindful of that. Collaboration is also a defining characteristic of a wiki. Please do not make controversial edits before discussing them on the talk page. Thank you for understanding. -Fsotrain09 17:17, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply Fsotrain09. I have posted on the Talk:North_Korea about using the common name DPR Korea/DPRK, please see my post there. "North Korea" is not the most common name as per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names) criterion. We definitely need North Korea to redirect to the DPRK DPR Korea and Democratic People's Republic of Korea pages, but not vice versa, this is what is needed to allow the average reader to find by the common name as well as any less common geographic name.
Please reply on the Talk page, as my personal talk page isn't really the place. Thank you for your understanding. now3d 2006-10-04 18:32 GMT
