Old Swan

Old Swan is an inner-city area of Liverpool, Merseyside, England. It is located fairly centrally in the city, bordered by Stoneycroft, Dovecot, Broadgreen, Edge Hill and Fairfield and Wavertree.

Old Swan is a working class district of Liverpool, with a collection of clothes and food shops along Prescot Road serving local residents, also known as the A57, that runs from the city centre. This road passes through Kensington and Fairfield prior to running through Old Swan and then through Knotty Ash (famous for its comedy clown Ken Dodd) and Dovecot towards St Helens. Housing in the district is mostly in densely-packed 'two up, two down' terraces.
It contains six schools, including Broadgreen J.M.I., St Annes Stanley C of E Primary, St Oswalds Catholic Primary, Corinthian Avenue Primary, St Cuthbert Catholic Primary and Broadgreen High School (formerly known as Highfield and Broadgreen Community Comprehensive), which is a specialised sixth form and technology college.
The district also features an old wartime cinema atop of the main row of shops on Prescot Road. The pyramid building is the inspiration of many Old Swan ghost stories.
Old Swan is represented by three Liberal Democrat councillors, Keith Turner, Berni Turner and Kevin Firth.
The area is a named after one of three public houses at a main road junction, the others being (logically) The Cygnet, and the "Red House". From the "Old Swan" St Oswald St. leads south to a junction where Edge Lane and Edge Lane Drive all meet. Turning left/east at this junction, at another public house called "The Paraffin Oil Shop", the next road junction holds yet another Old Swan public house, "The Glass House". It should be noted that this is no reference to any military lock-up, but a reminder that the land near by was once occupied by a Glass works Factory.

- There are regular buses (numbers 1, 8, 9, 10, 61, 62, 68 and variants thereof) providing services to the city centre, as well as to Aigburth, Bootle, Huyton and St Helens.
- The Merseytram System (Line 2) was due to run through Old Swan but this has now been cancelled after funding from the British Government was denied.
