[edit] History
RPN was launched on June 29, 1960 as Kanlaon Broadcasting System (KBS), under Roberto Benedicto. Kanlaon is a name of a volcano in the Philippine island of Negros, the home province of Benedicto. During the 1970's, the network enjoyed popularity when its shows John En Marsha and Superstar became a hit. After Pres. Ferdinand Marcos sequestered the rights of Chronicle Broadcasting Network (CBN-9) of the late Eugenio Lopez, Sr., he awarded the Channel 9 frequency through a Presidential Decree.
After the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, all of the stocks and assets of RPN, IBC and Banahaw Broadcasting Corporation's BBC-2 were sequestered by the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG). President Corazon Aquino awarded BBC-2 through an executive order to ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation headed by the late Eugenio Lopez, Jr.. RPN and IBC assets and equipments were turned over to the Government Communications Group.
The network gained popularity once again in 1996 when it aired the Mexican soap opera Marimar and started the telenovela craze in the country. The two top networks, ABS-CBN and GMA Network were forced to include telenovelas to their programming lineup.
There had been plans to sell RPN and another sequestered network, Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) to the private sector. Possible buyers include Solar Entertainment (RPN's current blocktimer and production partner) and the PLDT Group of Manny Pangilinan.
Last March 11, 2007 RPN launched some new programs with its slogan Kasama Mo!. Some of its local programs like Philippines' Next Top Model, KEMIS: Ke Misis Umaasa, Showbiz Ka!, Sabi ni Nanay, and Dalawang Tisoy are all produced by the Solar Entertainment Corporation under the ownership of Wilson Tieng. This joint co-production agreement with Solar makes RPN a de facto part of the Solar family, similar to that arrangement where that primetime block was still called Prime Shift.
