Varecia rubra É. Geoffroy, 1812 |
The Red Ruffed Lemur (Varecia rubra) is one of two species in the genus Varecia, the ruffed lemurs, the other being the Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata). Like all lemurs it is native to Madagascar, occurring only in the Masoala peninsula in the northeast of the island.[2]
The Red Ruffed Lemur grows to be about 7-8 lbs and can live up to 20 years in the wild.[3] It is primarily frugivorous but also eats leaves and seeds.[3] This prosimian has litters of up to six and its gestation period is 102 days.[3]
