Roselia (ロゼリア Rozeria?) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon from the Pokémon franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. It is one of the few Pokémon whose names is the same in all languages.

Roselia's name is a portmanteau of rose and rosalia, a type of melody. The species of flower, Azalea may be another influence of its name. Another possible root of its name might be the country Bulgaria, famous for its Rose Valley.

In a demo of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl played at PokéJungle, a new Pokémon made its appearance, the evolved form of Roselia named Roserade, as Ken Sugimori had announced at the Pokémon Garden site; Ken Sugimori later stated the possibility of a pre-evolved form of Roselia as well, which was revealed to be Budew.

[edit] Biological characteristics

Roselia appears to be a sentient plant. Its main body is green, and it has three spikey growths on its head. It carries two roses like giant pompoms: one blue and one red (Compare with Jumpluff). Physically, Roselia is a very small plant Pokémon with tiny, featureless legs covered by a single-leaf “skirt”. (Compare with Gardevoir's body.)

Roselia is defined mostly by its flowers in many cases. The flowers give off a relaxing fragrance that brings serenity to living things. The stronger its aroma, the healthier the Roselia is, and a Roselia that drinks nutritionally rich springwater blooms with particularly lovely flowers. It is therefore found in wild areas untouched by human presence.

The flowers, as well as the rest of Roselia’s body, are also its weapons for battling. First of all, Roselia’s trademark flower aromas have the effect of making its foes careless when battling. Not only that, but the aroma is an attack, Aromatherapy. This attack heals Roselia and its fellow teammates of all status ailments, such as Sleep or Paralyze. (Compare with Chimecho's Heal Bell). Pokémon in the wild sometimes find it valuable to try and steal the flowers on Roselia’s arms, so Roselia shoots out sharp thorns hidden within its flowers as projectiles at any opponent. These thorns are also used in Pokémon trainer battles. Also, the thorny growths on this Pokémon's head contain a potent poison that wounds any opponent, gradually weakening them. Another way it uses its flowers are in the move Petal Dance, in which it showers the opponent with a storm of razor-sharp flower petals. This move, however, is risky for Roselia: upon attacking with Petal Dance the second or third time, it will become extremely fatigued, causing it to become confused. Another method of attack, for Roselia is to use Growth to sharpen its Special Attack stat, then use Petal Dance, Magical Leaf, which always hits without taking into regard the foe's evasiveness, or Giga Drain, which replenishes hit points equal to half the damage inflicted.

[edit] In the Pokémon video games

Roselia is a relatively common Pokémon in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. It can also be snagged as a shadow Pokémon in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

It also has a high chance of having the ability Poison Point, which may poison the foe when Roselia is attacked.

One notable trainer who uses a Roselia is Wally, a character in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, who is battled in Victory Road before the Elite Four in Ever Grande City. It is male and at level 44 on the first encounter. After beating the Elite Four, its level subsequently increases in later battles.

Ken Sugimori, the creator of the Pokémon franchise, had hinted that Roselia might get an evolution in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. It proved to be true on July 20, 2006, when it was revealed that Roselia evolves into Roserade with the Light Stone.

Ken also hinted that Roselia might also get a pre-evolution, which it did in the form of Budew. Thus, Roselia became the only Pokémon so far to have received both a pre-evolution and an evolution in the same generation.

[edit] Notable Episodes

Episode No. - "Pros and Con Artists"

Episode No. - "Win, Lose or Drew"

In these episodes, one of May's opponents, Drew, is shown to have a Roselia. Drew appears with Roselia in several other episodes as well, including the Kanto episodes. Roselia pretty much shows up in every episode that Drew is in. Roselia seems to be Drew's favorite Pokémon, since it usually travels beside Drew and not in its Poké Ball.

A Roselia that was owned by the Victoria Winstrate also appeared in the episode "Candid Camerupt". It lost to May's Beautifly.

[edit] In other media

Roselia has yet to appear in the manga.

Roselia has only appeared twice in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, as Basic Grass type Pokémon:

  • EX Dragon
  • EX Legend Maker
