Hoenn
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hoenn (ホウエン地方 Hōen-chihō?) is a Pokemon region in the fictional Pokemon world. It was shown in the Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald games.
Hoenn is roughly based on Kyūshū in Japan and lies to the southwest of Kanto and Johto in the Pokémon world. According to Pokemon legend, the Hoenn region was formed by the legendary land Pokémon, Groudon, raising the land and the legendary ocean Pokémon, Kyogre, expanding the sea.
The Hoenn region also contains its own Pokémon League, called the Hoenn League, and its own Elite Four, unlike Johto and Kanto which share their Elite Four in the video games. Sidney, Phoebe, Glacia, and Drake are the Elite Four in Hoenn. In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Steven is the Pokémon Champion, while in Pokémon Emerald, Wallace is the Pokémon Champion; Wallace's position as Sootopolis Gym leader was being filled by his mentor Juan in that game.
In the anime, this is the region where the Advanced Generation series occur as Ash and company explore this new region featuring more than 100 new Pokémon. Also in the anime, a Kingdom called the "Mirage Kingdom" is located between routes 111 and 112. LaRousse City, which was shown in the movie Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys is in eastern Hoenn.
[edit] Geography
This region is notable for breaking the tradition of naming towns and cities after colors and plants, which was utilized in the previous two generations, e.g Fuchsia City in the first generation and Azalea Town in the second generation. Important landscape features include a large river that flows through Route 119 (leading up to the western entrance to Fortree City), Petalburg Forest (between Petalburg City and Rustboro City), Mt. Chimney (north of Lavaridge Town), and Mt. Pyre (where the Red and Blue Orbs can be found). In the anime, places are named differently from the videogames.
The Battle Tower, introduced in Pokémon Crystal, is found in southern Hoenn, and is only accessible by flight or ferry. In Pokémon Emerald, it evolves into the giant Battle Frontier. Hoenn is also the first region to feature a desert area, although not as large as that of the Orre region shown later.
Routes in Hoenn are numbered from 101 to 134. This was done to presumably prevent players from thinking that they could travel back to Kanto and Johto in Ruby and Sapphire, as Johto's last route was 46, which itself was extended from the 28 routes in Kanto.
