Scrolling shooters, also known as the more generic term "Shoot 'em ups" or "Shmups", emphasize fast-paced shooting on a large scrolling playfield with many enemies.
Scrolling shooters are further divided into horizontal (side view) and vertical (top view) shoot 'em ups, but there are also some borderline cases like alternating horizontal and vertical stages in Konami's Axelay, or even 3-D graphics and third-person perspective like in Nintendo's Star Fox, which is, at heart, still a shoot 'em up.
