Sealed sand - Suiko's counterattack (Japanese: 封じられた砂 水虎の反撃 - Fūjiwareta suna, Suiko no hangeki) is the episode number 218 of the anime series Naruto, and the tenth episode of the 9th season.
[edit] Plot
Shikamaru & Ino have just arrived in time to back up Temari, while Kiba & Choji are helping Kankuro. Naruto & Rock Lee have not yet made it to Gaara's position, though. Shikamaru tries his Shadow Imitation jutsu on Kyaku, but can't stretch his shadow far enough to reach her. Shikamaru & Temari exchange comments, while Ino looks on anxiously. Kyaku attacks with wind, but Temari blocks it.
Kiba, Choji & Kankuro team up and avoid the enemy's attack. Meanwhile, Gaara tries a new tactic against Suikon. When Suikon tries to hit him, Gaara grabs the business end of the flail with his sand. Although this allows Suikon to start drawing off some of Gaara's chakra, he still has enough to make a pillar of sand under his feet, rising about 100 feet in the air.
The Shitenshounin's leader, Jin, with Matsuri still strapped to his back, observes the action from a distance (Matsuri is also able to see some of this). He focuses on Gaara, who is ready to put the next part of his plan into action. Since both his sand and Suikon are still holding on to Suikon's weapon, Gaara is able to use his sand like a lasso, swinging Suikon around his head at tremendous speed. Naruto & Rock Lee finally get close enough to see this, and they express their concern.
Temari tries another fruitless attack against Kyaku, while Shikamaru & Ino look on. Shikamaru & Temari try to come up with a better plan. They try to close in, but only Temari makes it, while Shikamaru & Ino are blown backwards. They recover and rejoin Temari.
Kiba, Choji & Kankuro try to fight Ryūgan, but end up getting in each other's way. Gaara finally lets go of Suikon, sending him flying. Despite his armor, the impact with the ground stuns him for a while.
Jin has apparently seen enough, and draws his sword. He uses it to send a signal to his teammates, and the four of them work together to perform a unique jutsu. It is a chakra barrier, called "Jin's Good Twist of Fate" but it is focused only on Gaara. By using a water dragon made of chakra, it prevents Gaara from controlling his sand. He falls to the ground, but his fall is cushioned by his gourd (which is also made of sand).
Suikon attacks, thinking that Gaara is now at his mercy. However, Rock Lee appears just in time to deflect the attack. Naruto joins in with a heel drop to the back of Suikon's head. Gaara is surprised to see them, and they explain their presence. Sakura shows up to take care of Gaara, while Naruto & Rock Lee fight with Suikon. They don't inflict any damage, however.
Ino tries to use her Mind Body Switch jutsu on Kyaku, but she is too slow, and Kyaku knocks her down. Ino's shoulder is injured, and she is pretty much out of the fight from this point on. Shikamaru is upset, but is somewhat encouraged when Shino's insects make a quick flyby and pass on information to the rest of the team.
Kiba, Choji & Kankuro try to fight Ryūgan (again), but end up getting in each other's way (again). Naruto & Rock Lee fight with Suikon, using only taijutsu, while Sakura frees Gaara from the chakra barrier. Shino's insects appear and tell Sakura that Ino is hurt. Gaara assures Sakura that he is all right, and she goes to help Ino.
Kankuro is getting frustrated, and looks over at Kiba. Kiba just grins and indicates Akamaru, who (unseen by Ryūgan) has retrieved several broken pieces from Kankuro's puppets. Kiba decides that he & Choji will provide a distraction while Kankuro attacks.
Shikamaru & Temari have backed up Kyaku close to a looming cliffside, which contains a waterfall (the battle is fought at the base). Temari uses another wind attack, but it's not aimed at Kyaku. While Kyaku is distracted, Shikamaru is able to use his Shadow Imitation jutsu on her. Temari was able to change the trajectory of the waterfall, giving Shikamaru an extra shadow to work with. Now that she can't move, Kyaku is helpless.
Temari summons Kamatari, who creates his own tornado and hurls the enemy ninja into the pool at the base of the waterfall. Temari is pleased with herself, and Shikamaru smiles back at her, somewhat less than enthusiastic. Sakura heals Ino's injuries, while Ino is depressed, feeling that she didn't contribute anything to the team.
Suikon injures Lee, and Gaara rejoins the fight, forming some of his Armor of Sand into a spear. He hurls the spear at Suikon, and it impales him through his front armor, his torso, and out through his back armor. Gaara is about to kill the wounded ninja, when he hears Matsuri cry out. Naruto assures Gaara that Lee & himself can take care of Suikon, so Gaara goes after Matsuri.
Kiba & Akamaru appear to use Gatsuuga, but it's just a feint; the real attack comes from behind, as the damaged (but still functioning) Kuroari puppet captures Ryūgan, and Kankuro finishes him off with Black Secret Technique Machine One Shot.
Jin, still holding Matsuri prisoner, retreats, with Gaara in pursuit. Shino uses his insects to guide the rest of the team in the right direction. Gaara closes in on his enemy, with the Jouhyou in his hand. End of episode.
[edit] Trivia
- Ironically, the techniques to finish Ryūgan and Kyaku are the same ones used to finish Sakon & Ukon and Tayuya, respectively.
