The Second and third placed teams start the qualifications for the UEFA Cup from the second round, as well as the National Cup winner if this winner has not already qualified. The Fourth placed team is Serbia's representative in the UEFA Intertoto Cup.
The last three teams at the end of the season get relegated to Second League called Prva Liga Telekom Srbija (First League Telecom Serbia).
[edit] History
While Serbia and Montenegro were part of the socialist Yugoslavia, their top league was the Yugoslav First League. When SFRY dissolved, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was formed in 1992 and the Serbian and Montenegrin teams played in this league, although it was still named Yugoslav First League. In 2003 the FR Yugoslavia was renamed to Serbia and Montenegro and the football league followed suit. The league of Serbia and Montenegro had 16 teams, but Meridian SuperLeague has 12 teams. Meridian SuperLeague will kick-off for the first time on 5th August 2006
